The Steps to a Healthier FL/Pinellas is a federally funded program to address the national problems of obesity, diabetes and asthma. The Pinellas County Health Department is working with the Pinellas County School system to implement interventions to help reduce these life-shortening diseases. Pinellas County has a higher incidence of diabetes, asthma and obesity than any of their peer counties in the state. The specific intervention areas with the highest disparity are St. Petersburg, Gulfport, Kenneth City and Pinellas Park.
Program Goals: Reduce Diabetes among children and adults Reduce Obesity among Children and adults Reduce Asthma among Children and adults Increase Physical Activity among children and adults Improve Nutrition and Eating Habits among children and adults Decrease tobacco use and exposure among children and adults
Programs in Pinellas County Schools: 1. Salad Program (District wide) 2. "Organ Wise Guys" (Elementary Schools) 3. Asthma & Diabetes Education (K-12) 4. MORE Health: "Pyramid Power" (Elementary Schools) 5. MORE Health: "Fit for Life" (Middle Schools) 6. MORE Health: "Eating Disorders and Nutrition" (High Schools) 7. Teen Cuisine Cooking (Middle Schools) 8. Family Obesity Education Services 9. Staff Walking Program
Activities: Convene monthly School Health Council meetings. Administer a health behavior survey to middle and high school students. Distribute Healthy Eating, Physical Activity materials. Administer a Health Survey for 3rd grade students. Administer the FitnessGram physical fitness assessment in Elementary School - High School. Provide elementary teachers with instructional materials on tobacco. Provide Asthma and Diabetes education for staff,students and families.
