Right To Know ( HAZCOM) Florida's State Requirements for Educational Facilities (SREF) indicate that schools must follow safety and health laws established by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). One important part of the OSHA standard relates to providing information about hazardous chemicals to employees who work with or around these materials. |

HAZCOM Regulation Requirements The Hazard Communications (HAZCOM) regulation requires that employers provide employees with safety information about chemicals in the workplace because employees have the Right-To-Know.
Several important items to assure employee safety and compliance are part of the law: 1) Employees must be trained to understand the hazards associated with materials they use or may be exposed to during their work. The training must include all the information an employee needs to work safely with the material. 2) Hazardous materials must be properly labeled with an least the following: Chemical name Types of hazards (i.e. flammable, toxic, corrosive, reactive, irritant, etc.) Name, address and emergency number of the manufacturer or importer Safe handling instructions Safe storage instructions Safety equipment needed for safe handling Special instructions concerning children A "signal word" such as danger, warning or caution 3) Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs) must be "readily accessible" to employees. Put paper copies into a binder for ready reference and training needs. Keep them current and add to them anytime you order a new chemical or get an updated MSDS. 4) Maintain a site chemical inventory for all hazardous chemicals. |
