Wellness Tip of the Month: If you have lived in Florida for any time at all, you have probably come across the inconspicuous looking but powerful Fire Ant! Fire ants bite by injecting a toxin through an abdominal stinger after they grip your skin between their jaws. No wonder it hurts! Unfortunately, they are not limited to one bite.
Bites will happen but here are a few tips to help control the pain and reduce any chance of infection. • Apply a cool compress to the affected site. • Apply Hydrocortisone cream or Benadryl cream to the area after removing cool compress. • It is common for a small pustule to develop. Avoid scratching this area as this can break the skin and may lead to an infection at the site. • If needed, take an anti-histamine such as Benadryl or Claritin to relieve the itching and burning which can last up to 72 hours. • While fire ants can be anywhere, be especially careful when picnicking, walking in the grassy areas, around roadsides, garbage cans and fallen limbs.
