Definition/Purpose

An instructional substitute is defined as an individual who is responsible for providing continuity to the educational program during the absence of the regular classroom teacher. Substituting provides a challenging and rewarding career opportunity while making a valuable contribution to our students.

Requirements for Substitute Teaching

  • Currently we are hiring applicants who hold or have held a Florida or out-of-state educator's certificate within the last ten years or those who hold a valid Statement of Eligibility from the Florida Department of Education. Recent graduates who have completed a full-time instructional internship in Pinellas County Schools may also be considered.

  • Submit a completed online application

  • Official transcripts; copies or faxes are NOT acceptable.

  • Two current references (reference forms may be downloaded here using Adobe Reader) or you can request the reference forms be sent directly by our office when completing your online application. Simply check the appropriate box when completing the reference information on the application.

  • To remain on the active substitute teacher list you must work a minimum of 2 (two) days per month. If you do not meet this requirement, you will be terminated. You will be eligible for rehire 6 (six) months after your termination date. Your application will be considered based on the current hiring guidelines.

  • Be accessible by touch tone telephone, have a telephone number within our local calling area (ie: areas that can be called from Pinellas County without requiring the use of an area code) and be available for service for a minimum of two days per month.
