How Are Applicants Chosen to Become Substitutes?

Thank you for your interest in becoming a substitute teacher. Completed applications will be kept on file for one year and reviewed on an "as needed" basis in the priority order listed below. The number of absences requiring substitute teachers, the grade level and/or subject area of absences requiring long term substitutes, and the availability of currently employed substitute teachers are some of the contributing factors that determine our hiring needs. Although we typically hire approximately twelve hundred new substitute teachers each year, the number of applications usually exceeds the number of hired substitutes. Selected applicants will be contacted to schedule a time for processing, background screening (including fingerprints), and an Orientation or Three-day Workshop. Therefore, it is important that applicants include phone numbers and e-mail addresses where they can be reached during regular business hours.

Due to the requirements included in the No Child Left Behind Act, we will be prioritizing applications in the following order:

  1. Those who currently hold or have held a Florida Educator's Certificate within the last ten years.

  2. Those who currently hold or have held an out of state educator's certificate, within the last ten years, for which Florida has reciprocity. Click here for the FDOE page for out of state certification.

  3. Those who hold a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and are currently enrolled in a college of education program. Or, those who hold a Bachelor's degree with a valid Statement of Eligibility, from the Florida Department of Education, stating that all requirements have been met for issuance of a Florida Educator's Certificate (except fingerprint clearance). Documentation is required.

  4. Those who have earned a minimum of 60 semester hours from an accredited college or university and are currently enrolled in a college of education. Documentation is required.

  5. Those who have earned a Bachelor's or Associate's degree or have completed 60 semester hours from an accredited college or university.
