Thursday, October 25, 2007 - 10:00 a.m. Meet the Author Meet the Author is an annual event held each fall featuring a guest children’s author. This live teleconference is broadcast on WPDS TV Ch. 14. Students participate by reading the guest author's books and working from an activity book supplied by the office of library media/technology. After several weeks of activities, students create questions for a contest hosted by the office of library media/technology. |

Thursday, November 15, 2007 - 7:00 p.m. Pinellas Tellers: Student Storytelling Festival The office of library media/technology, in partnership with the Pinellas County Public Library Cooperative, and the community hosts a countywide storytelling festival, allowing students to improve their oral communication skills. The program is introduced by the library information specialist at each school. Professional storytellers are scheduled to visit participating schools to conduct workshops and to help students become quality tellers. Students practice their storytelling skills for several months. Schools select quality tellers to represent their school at the district storytelling festival. Following a performance by a professional teller, students and their families go into classrooms to show their skills in telling stories. |

Friday, February 15, 2008 - 10:00 a.m. Book Talk Book Talk is an annual booktalk competition for Pinellas County secondary school students. Participating schools are represented by two students and an alternate at the district competition. The students give a three- to five-minute oral presentation of a book they have read. Awards are given to first-, second- and third-place winners. A traveling plaque is presented to the first-place winner's school. |

Thursday, April 10, 2008- 7:00 p.m. Educational Media Awards (EMA'S) This annual event encourages students to communicate through media production. Students experience a positive educational learning experience as they create their video production. Beginning with the district competition, student-created video productions are eligible for further competitions with the possibility of national and international exposure and awards. |

Thursday, May 22, 2008 Battle of the Books The Battle of the Books is a fun way to get students to read a variety of books and learn to comprehend what they are reading. It is a great way to promote recreational reading. The program is a "quiz bowl" type of game in which teams try to identify titles and authors of the 15 Sunshine State Young Readers Award Books from questions based on plots, settings and characters. |
