On September 23, 2008, Julie M. Janssen, Ed.D, was appointed superintendent of Pinellas County Schools. Dr. Janssen received her B.A. degree in education from the University of South Florida (USF), a master’s degree in educational leadership and administration from Nova Southeastern University and her doctoral degree from USF.
Dr. Janssen is a graduate of Boca Ciega High. She joined the district in 1970 as a teacher at Perkins Elementary. She continued her teaching career in Belize, her native country, for nine years as a mathematics and English instructor at St. John’s College. Dr. Janssen returned to Pinellas County Schools in 1980 and taught at Pinellas Technical Education Centers and Morgan Fitzgerald Middle.

She taught high school math at Lakewood High and served as the program director for the Center for Advanced Technologies (CAT) magnet program before becoming an assistant principal in 1991. She became principal at Countryside High in 1998 and moved to St. Petersburg High as principal in 2004.
In 2006, Dr. Janssen was appointed deputy superintendent, chief academic officer. In this role, she provided oversight for schools through the region offices, professional development and student support, research and accountability, and the Pinellas Technical Education Centers.

Dr. Janssen is an adjunct instructor in the USF College of Education’s graduate program. She also is a consultant with Phale D. Hale Education Consulting Inc., serving as an evaluator of PreK-12 magnet schools and a curriculum planner/writer/program designer for MSAP Grants, and has done extensive work with school districts throughout the U.S. involving attractor programs, staff development and program evaluation for low-performing schools.
Dr. Janssen has been recognized for her leadership accomplishments with the following awards:
- 2005 District Winner, Florida Department of Education Principal Achievement Award for Outstanding Leadership.
- 2005 Region IV Winner, Florida Department of Education Principal Achievement Award for Outstanding Leadership.
- 2005 Finalist, Florida African-American Education Alliance, “School Administrator of the Year.”
- 2000 Pinellas County PTSA “Principal of the Year.”
