ChairScholars Foundation, Inc. was founded in 1990 by Alicia and Hugo Keim as a means to provide a college education for children with severe physical challenges. It is an all volunteer organization and is a tax-exempt, charitable and educational organization dedicated to helping physically challenged young men and women attend college. The program is growing. At first, there was only a "National" program which chose students throughout the United States. In 1996, they joined with the Hillsborough Education Foundation to provide "Local" college scholarships for elementary school children from Hillsborough County and the Tampa Bay area.
Students in grades 6 though 9 may apply through their individual schools. Once accepted, scholars sign a contract promising to stay in school, keep their grades up and remain drug and crime free. Upon graduation from high school, students who live up to their contracts will receive a prepaid tuition scholarship to any Florida state college or university.
In Pinellas County Schools, the program is coordinated through the Education Foundation/Doorways Program.
The address for ChairScholars is 16101 Carencia Lane, Odessa, FL 33556-3278. The phone number is 813-920-1981.
