SECONDARY GIFTED Gifted programs in middle and high schools may be found throughout Pinellas County.
Middle School
Gifted classes meet daily in middle school. Critical reading is taught in sixth grade with an emphasis on learning interpretative thinking skills. Scientific thinking is emphasized in seventh grade, and students learn strategies in critical thinking, future planning, leadership and debate. Humanities, with the study of cultures, archaeology and anthropology, is introduced in grade eight.
Mathematics Education for Gifted Secondary School Students (MEGSSS) is available for gifted students who are highly advanced in mathematics. Eligibility criteria for 6th grade MEGSSS is aligned with the district criteria for advanced math. The student must have a 7, 8, or 9 stanine in mathematics and a 7, 8, or 9 stanine in reading on 4th grade FCAT or equivalent scores on other standardized achievement tests to be eligible. Integrated Mathematics and Science with Technology (IMAST) is a program designed to challenge the gifted seventh- or eighth-grade student in the areas of science and mathematics. Special criteria apply.
MEGSSS and IMAST are offered at specific middle schools in north and south Pinellas County. Arterial busing is provided for students enrolled in MEGSSS.

High School
Gifted students are offered several options at the high school level. There are numerous magnet school options, including the International Baccalaureate programs at St. Petersburg High School and Palm Harbor University High, as well as the honors and advanced placement classes offered at other high schools in the Pinellas school district. Students can contact their guidance counselors for specific requirements.
Summer opportunities are offered to high school students through the Governor's Summer Program for Gifted Students. Information on these programs is available through the gifted program office in April of each year.
