Kidstart THE KIDSTART CURRICULUM was developed in 1989 by teachers and community specialists to sensitize youth to the issues of homelessness. The curriculum provides young people with activities and projects to respond to homelessness in Pinellas County.
THE ELEMENTARY CURRICULUM was updated in February 2001 to reintroduce it to teachers. Some exciting additions have been added, including correlation with the Florida Sunshine State Standards and FCAT testing, as well as updated statistics. A community service project is also part of the lessons. Through this project, students will not only learn about homelessness, they also will be able to help the homeless in Pinellas County. The project will be a food, toiletry and linen drive. When the project is complete, the filled containers will be picked up for distribution to a local shelter. ALL TEACHERS are able to receive the curriculum for free to use in their classrooms. Periodically during Pro-Ed days (professional education days for teachers and staff), H.E.A.T reintroduces Kidstart to school personnel during their bus tours of shelters and homeless services available in the county.
A COPY HAS BEEN SENT TO EVERY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. While we are targeting 3rd-5th grade teachers this year, every teacher is welcome to receive the curriculum.
IF YOU ARE NOT ALREADY SLATED TO RECEIVE the curriculum and would like information on how you can participate, contact H.E.A.T.
