Submitting an Application

The Substitute Teacher application is now online. Paper applications will no longer be accepted.
An online application must be completed to be considered for employment as a substitute teacher. Only completed applications will be accepted and processed. The following items are needed to complete the application.
  1. Official college transcript(s) from an accredited college or university that lists at least 60 semester hours.

  2. Two professional references including current or most recent employer. References from relatives and/or friends are not acceptable. Reference forms are available as part of the online application process or you can print them out using the following link: Reference forms

  3. Copies of any teaching certificates or licenses (current or expired).

Review of Application

Applications will be reviewed and selected for hire on an "as needed" basis. Factors that determine "need" include, but are not limited to, number of absences requiring substitutes, time of the school year, availability of currently employed substitutes, and number of substitutes in "critical shortage" areas.

Fingerprints/Processing

The Subsitute Teacher Placement Office will contact the applicant and set up a day/time for the applicant to be processed. At processing, the following steps occur:

  1. The applicant receives pertinent information regarding Pinellas County School District Policies.

  2. Applicant completes necessary paperwork (i.e., W-4, Criminal History...)

  3. Applicant must provide: Valid Driver's license, Social Security card with current name, and if applicable, Resident Alien card.

  4. Applicant is fingerprinted. The fingerprinting fee is $57.25.
    Forms of acceptable payment for fingerprinting are:
    a. Payment made in ADVANCE with a credit card via the internet at http://www.flprints.com or by calling (877)357-7456.
    b. Payment, via money order, made out to Fingerprinting Services LLC


NO OTHER FORM OF PAYMENT CAN BE ACCEPTED


Applicant will be scheduled for either a Substitute Teacher Orientation or a 3-day Substitute Teacher Workshop, depending on prior K-12 public school teaching/substituting experience.

Salary/Payroll Information

REGULAR SUBSTITUTE
  • Associate's degree or 60 semester hours - $65.00 daily rate.

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher - $70.00 daily rate.

  • One half day is 3 ¾ hours or less and equals ½ of the daily rate.

**All substitutes must work at least 2 days a month or will become inactive.

LONG-TERM SUBSTITUTE
    Must teach sixteen (16) or more consecutive days and are paid an additional $20.00 per day. Long-term pay begins AFTER the sixteenth (16) consecutive day in the same position and is retroactive to the first day of the assignment.

Long term pay is only available for instructional positions. To be eligible for a long-term substitute position, the person must be an approved Pinellas County substitute teacher AND hold a current Florida Educator's Certificate in the appropriate grade level and/or subject area for the assignment. In cases where there are no available substitutes who meet this requirement, the second choice is an approved substitute who holds a minimum of a bachelor's degree and is eligible for certification in the assigned area.
Supporting services positions such as PE aide, ABC room paraprofessional, intervention room paraprofessional, and pre-k paraprofessional and pre-k assistants are NOT eligible for long term pay even for instructional substitutes.
