Orientation/3-Day Workshop

Orientation
The substitute teacher orientation is designed for applicants who have recent K-12 public school teaching or substituting experience. During the orientation, the prospective substitute is given an overview of the school district and its policies. The substitute trainer facilitates a discussion regarding topics such as emergency procedures, being prepared for the classroom, appropriate dress, classroom management and legal and ethical issues.

3-Day Workshop
A requirement for an applicant who has no recent K-12 public school teaching or substitute teaching experience, is to complete a three-day workshop. At the workshop, information regarding discipline policies/procedures, safety, time-filler ideas… will be discussed in detail. Also, the applicant will have the opportunity to "shadow" a teacher to obtain additional teaching tips and strategies.

CHAMPs (Conversation, Help, Activity, Movement, and Participation) for Substitute Teachers
This six-hour workshop provides training in proactive and positive approaches to classroom management. If you are required to attend the 3-day workshop, you will also be required to attend CHAMPS training within 2 months of your hire date. While there is no cost to attend this workshop, there is no compensation for attendance. Failure to complete the workshop within the first two months of employment will result in restriction from substitute teaching in all Pinellas County Schools until the workshop has been completed. This workshop is also available to all substitutes in Pinellas County on a voluntary basis.

Final Step
When all requirements are completed, an applicant receives his/her substitute teacher identification number and becomes an active substitute teacher with Pinellas County Schools.

You may not substitute teach until your number is activated. This could be as long as seven to ten days after the last day of your orientation or workshop.
