Brochure for 2007-08

WHAT IS A FUNDAMENTAL HIGH SCHOOL?
A fundamental program places a strong emphasis on all academic areas as well as the values of respect, responsibility, good study habits and self-discipline. The importance of home and school working together to promote successful learning is a critical element of a fundamental school. Students and their parents/guardians sign an agreement to adhere to features unique to the fundamental philosophy.

HOW IS A FUNDAMENTAL SCHOOL THE SAME AND DIFFERENT FROM A REGULAR SCHOOL?
All school board policies apply to fundamental school students. Fundamental schools follow the same school calendar and the same grading criteria as all other Pinellas County public schools. Fundamental school students must sign the district’s "Code of Student Conduct" in addition to a fundamental agreement. Students must adhere to a stricter dress code and follow all discipline expectations to continue their enrollment in a fundamental program.

CURRICULUM
Osceola Fundamental is increasing its elective offerings (including exciting new Advanced Placement courses) and is expanding its culinary arts and TV production programs. A variety of extracurricular activities are offered -- including a full range of competitive sports, award-winning band and chorus programs, and one of the top literary high school magazines in the state. The school recently opened a new pre-engineering program and offers top-notch world language courses in Spanish, Italian and French.

HOMEWORK AND TEST SIGNING PRIVILEGE
Fundamental high school students may earn the privilege of not having their homework and tests signed by their parents/guardians. Fundamental school 9th-graders must have their homework signed by their parents during the first semester of their 9th-grade year. Homework and tests do not need to be signed after the first semester if the student has had all first semester work signed and has maintained at least a 3.0 grade point average. If a student fails to complete work assignments and maintain at least a 3.0 GPA in any subsequent semester, the student must revert to having work signed for the next semester. The student again must earn the privilege of not having homework and tests signed.

ENROLLMENT
Students at fundamental middle schools will be admitted first to the 9th-grade fundamental program. Students who have attended “traditional” programs at Largo, Osceola, Madeira Beach, Dunedin Highland and Riviera middle schools will be given a priority. All other students are assigned by lottery through the magnet, fundamental, careeer academy application process each year.
