COUNTYWIDE FUNDAMENTAL SCHOOLS (K-8) A fundamental school is a family-oriented school whose structured environment, updated "back to basics" approach and joint parent-teacher-student commitment provide quality education for all students in a safe environment. Important features include a focus on student self-responsibility and discipline, daily homework, a dress code which exceeds that of the school district and required attendance at conferences and monthly parent meetings.
Parents must provide transportation for their children to the seven countywide elementary and middle fundamental schools.
COUNTYWIDE MAGNET PROGRAMS (K/1-12) Countywide magnet programs provide a wide range of educational opportunities with very specialized curricula. Arterial transportation to and from countywide magnet programs is provided by the school district at no cost to the parent.

APPLICATION TO COUNTYWIDE FUNDAMENTAL AND MAGNET SCHOOLS Students enter countywide fundamental schools and magnet programs through the application process. Applicants (students) must be residing in Pinellas County at the time of application.
If the number of applicants exceeds the number of openings, a random computer selection process is used.
Applicants MUST be living in Pinellas County with an active student ID number. Students who are not currently enrolled must call or visit one of the two Family Education and Information Centers to receive an ID number prior to submitting an application. The new student ID number will not be active for 24 hours after the registration process.
APPLICANTS FOR HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAMS: Students who are currently enrolled in a high school magnet or career academy program and choose to apply for the next school year to another school or program, including the St. Petersburg Collegiate High School charter school, will lose their magnet or career academy program seat for the next school year.
Students currently enrolled in a high school magnet or career academy program who submit an application through the countywide application process will be permitted to complete the current school year in the magnet or career academy but will be withdrawn at the end of the school year. These students will also need to go through the FEIC for a new high school assignment for the next school year in the event they are not assigned to the new program for which they applied.
APPLICATION INFORMATION FOR 2008-09 All magnet, fundamental and career academy programs are still taking late applications. To submit a late application, families should call or visit the school that offers the program and ask to be added to the wait list.
Elementary and middle school magnet and fundamental school wait lists last the entire school year. High school lists last through the 10th day of the second semester.
After the school year has started, if a student withdraws from a magnet or fundamental school or career academy, he or she will be assigned to a school that has space available. Every effort will be made to assign students to their close-to-home school or the next closest school that has available space.
AREA MAGNET SCHOOLS Pinellas County Schools, under the Magnet Schools Assistance Program, received federal grant dollars to design and develop four specialized attendance area programs. These four schools, which are not countywide programs, serve students who live in the southern portion of the county. These schools are still taking applications.
