The curriculum at the Center for Advancement of the Sciences and Technology emphasizes mathematics, science, technology and foreign language. Goals include increasing student interest, motivation and achievement in those areas. Students discover the concepts and models through discovery learning, investigation and application.

The program is delivered through hands-on experiences applied to real-life situations. The use of live animals, plants, environmental areas and science labs enhance learning. The Everyday Math program builds high-level thinking skills while using manipulatives for problem solving. The use of technology in every academic area enables the student to become competent in accessing and performing in an international society. Daily Spanish lessons area taught by a nationally known team of native speakers.

Exploration into other cultures through music, dance, theater and art is what you will find at Perkins Elementary. Hi-tech labs and Apple laptop computers are available for all third- fourth- and fifth-grade students. Students use these individual laptops for research, typing papers and observing sites such as museums and zoos. They often create PowerPoint presentations to share with other students. They are taught how to communicate and understand the possibilities of future technology of computers. Spanish instruction from three certified foreign language teachers is offered daily as well as daily physical education classes. Fourth- and fifth-grade students choose from 10 different arts “focus groups” to enhance their studies. All first- and second-grade students receive violin instruction using the Suzuki method. Perkins Elementary offers a full-sized dance studio; two visual arts studios with kilns, potter’s wheels, an art gallery and a 250-seat theater for performances.

Step onto the campus of Melrose Elementary, and you’ll see student journalists at work. This journalism magnet program is led by journalists-in-residence, each of whom has experience in real-world journalism. Students receive hands-on, real-life experiences that prepare them to be better writers, communicators and informed, involved citizens. Melrose has the school district’s only full-time journalism program for students in grades K-5 and is nationally recognized for its unique curriculum, which also includes technology and literary arts. The program won the 2007 Weekly Reader Student Publishing Award and is recognized as the No. 1 elementary school newspaper in the nation. The program is designed to prepare students for admission to the Center for the Arts and Communication Studies at John Hopkins Middle.

The Center for Gifted Studies provides the only full-time gifted program in the county for students in grades 1-5. Students experience a challenging academic curriculum and develop creative-thinking skills. Opportunities for self-directed learning are enhanced by high expectations. Subject matter is related to real-world problems and situations and offers Spanish inclusion. Students applying for first grade must have been evaluated formally with a qualifying score by the application deadline and be awaiting placement. Students applying for grades 2-5 must meet all of the state requirements for gifted placement and have a current gifted educational plan.

International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme World School

James Sanderlin Elementary became an official Primary Years Programme (PYP) World School in February 2007, under the umbrella of the International Baccalaureate Organization. The PYP focuses on the development of the internationally minded child, who cares about himself, the community and the world at large. The magnet combines the best research and practices from a range of national systems with a wealth of knowledge and experience from international schools to create a relevant and engaging educational framework for all children.

The magnet, designed for students between the ages of 3 and 12 years, focuses on the development of the whole child. Learning takes place in a variety of settings throughout the day. PYP is a comprehensive approach to teaching and learning. The PYP prescribes a curriculum framework of essential elements – knowledge, concept, skills, attitudes and action – each of which is reflected in the learner profile and is a reference point for the construction of the school’s curriculum. The magnet focuses on the total growth of the developing child, touching hearts as well as minds and encompassing social, physical, emotional and cultural needs in addition to academic welfare.

Center for Mathematics and Engineering

Winner of the 2007 Magnet Schools of America Magnet School of Excellence Award, Douglas L. Jamerson Jr. Elementary is the site of the Center for Mathematics and Engineering. The very nature of engineering and the design process poses problems that only can be solved through teamwork, which fosters interaction among students of different social, economic, ethnic and racial backgrounds. Through the Jamerson Design Process, children work together in cooperative groups. They work on engineering design challenges, projects and activities that require them to define problems, research, design, construct, test, analyze and communicate solutions.

The school has partnerships with the University of South Florida College of Engineering and IBM. There are curriculum coaches for mathematics, engineering, technology and science. Integrated engineering is included in all subjects. The goal is to make learning an adventure, applying engineering skills to solve problems in each class and subject. Students apply some aspect of engineering in their classroom tasks every day, using what they are learning in reading, mathematics, science, social studies, art and music.
