Center for the Arts and Communication Studies at John Hopkins Middle 701 16th St. S St. Petersburg, FL 33705 Contact: Michael Vasallo (727) 893-2400
John Hopkins Middle is the only Pinellas County middle school accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The Center for the Arts and Communication Studies emphasizes three magnet strands of educational opportunities: fine and performing arts, literary arts and global studies.
Students participating in the rigorous content of the fine and performing arts benefit intellectually, personally and socially, and have the option to focus in one of seven areas of study: art, dance, instructional music, orchestra, piano, theatre and vocal music. Students applying for the fine and performing arts strand must meet eligibility criteria: a 3.0 GPA on their most recent report card and a stanine of 5 or above in reading and math on the spring FCAT norm-reference test.
Students applying for the literary arts and global studies strands do not have entrance criteria to apply for the programs. Literary arts students participate in our journalism program, which is taught by highly qualified teachers who have worked in the field of journalism. These students publish the J. Hop Times four times a year, which was named the best middle school newspaper by the Weekly Reader. Students who select global studies will explore their world with environmental, ecological, social and cultural views concentrating on topics such as overpopulation, resource allocation, cultural awareness and social consciousness.
