Pinellas Students Exceed National Average In All Grades in FCAT NRT Reading and Math
Pinellas County Schools’ students performed above the national average in 2008 Florida Comprehensive Achievement Test (FCAT) NRT results in both reading and math at all grade levels.
Student performance on the NRT is reported in terms of median national percentile rank (NP) scores. As a norm-referenced test, the NRT allows for comparisons between students in Pinellas County and a sample of students drawn from across the nation. NP scores range from 1 to 99 with a score at the 50th percentile representing average performance.
Pinellas scores, all above the national average, were:
Reading – 3rd grade, 61; 4th grade, 70; 5th grade, 74; 6th grade, 67; 7th grade, 73; 8th grade, 69; 9th grade, 68; 10th grade, 69.
Math – 3rd grade, 63; 4th grade, 74; 5th grade, 79; 6th grade, 74; 7th grade, 74; 8th grade, 74; 9th grade, 73; 10th grade, 62.
Pinellas students also exceeded or tied the state averages at all grade levels except 10th in both reading and math. Increased performance was seen in reading in grades 4, 7, 8 and 10, and in math at grade 6.
The 2008 Pinellas NRT results are a little more mixed in comparison to the six other large districts in Florida. In a number of grade levels – grades 3, 4, 5 and 7 – Pinellas students scored the highest in comparison to the other large districts in reading. In math, Pinellas 4th-graders equaled the highest score among the large districts.
The FCAT NRT results are not used in determining the state’s A+ school grades or Annual Yearly Progress under the NCLB requirements.
Further analyses will be provided when Pinellas receives the FCAT SSS reading and math results in June. The FCAT SSS is a criterion-based test that measures the Sunshine State Standards in reading and math.
