DETAILS: The StAR (Student Alcohol Reduction) Teen/Parent Summit will be held at the St. Petersburg College Caruth Health Education Center in Pinellas Park 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Saturday, May 17. Keynote speakers will be Jim Leavitt, University of South Florida football coach, and attorney Darryl Rouson. Breakout sessions will be held for students and for parents.
Alcohol is the most commonly used drug among Pinellas County students. Pinellas County Schools’ safe and drug free schools have collaborated with the LiveFree!® Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition of Pinellas County to hold this event and educate youth about substance-abuse prevention. According to the 2006 Florida Youth Substance Abuse Survey, 58 percent of students report using alcohol in their lifetime, and 36 percent reported they had consumed alcohol in the past 30 days.
The summit is intended for students in grades 8-12 and for parents of high school students. Parents and students have been surveyed so the workshops and information fit the needs and requests of the community. Businesses in the community have donated money and items for breakfast, snacks, lunch and door prizes.
Only 125 spaces are available for this year’s summit. The registration deadline is 5 p.m. Thursday, May 15. You may register at http://www.pcsb.org/SDFS/GRAA/index.html.
