Families spend a fun evening with math
One would have never known that nearly 200 students and family members were doing math Monday night at Sandy Lane Elementary. They laughed, they smiled, they played math games. The fun was all a part of the design of the ST Family Math Night which was held in the school’s cafeteria.
“We wanted to bring the games to the families, adults and kids so that they could engage together,” said Brandon Smith, the lead mathematician for MIND Research Institute. “We want them to feel and touch math outside of the classroom but in a school environment.”
Sandy Lane’s math night was one of five being held at elementary schools this week throughout the district. The other schools are Campbell Park, Skyview, Gulfport and Leila G. Davis elementary.
Family Math Nights are being provided free to the schools through the district’s partnership with MIND Research Institute, the parent company to ST Math. In addition to the games, MIND Research Institute provided pizza and salad and each child received a book of games to take home. JiJi the penguin, the mascot of ST Math, also made a guest appearance.
Laurel Rotter leads Elementary Mathematics for the district. She said that schools participating this week were selected by random draw and that each site has more than 200 people planning to attend. And though the math nights are being held at five schools this week, all the district’s math coaches have been trained and now have the ability to host a math night at any school.

“A lot of this is about awareness,” Rotter said. “This is important because it’s being done in a game environment so it takes away the fear of math.”
