Recycled instruments support music programs
Feb. 20, 2017
Boca Ciega High School’s band program was the first Pinellas County recipient of refurbished instruments from the Recycled Tunes program.
The nine instruments, which included a cello, a violin, piccolo and a trumpet, were presented to the school’s band director John Schindler during a surprise visit.
“This is outstanding and there is definitely a need for a few extra instruments,” Schindler said. “There are a number of students who can’t rent or afford instruments.”
St. Petersburg College partnered with the Gasparilla Music Foundation to support music and education through the community outreach program Recycled Tunes. With Recycled Tunes, gently used instruments were donated at SPC locations and refurbished by Recycled Tunes. Those instruments will then be donated to Pinellas County Schools’ music programs. Boca Ciega High was the first recipient of the instruments.
St. Petersburg College/Gibbs Campus Provost Jamelle Conner and Jamie Zinober, a Recycled Tunes board member, delivered the instruments at Boca Ciega High.
“How many students are left out because they can’t not afford an instrument?” asked Zinober. “This (band) could be the reason that they stay in school.
