• Art-

    -Visual Art 1, 2 & 3: An emphasis on studio arts, students explore a wide range of 2D and 3D media, skills and techniques, as related to contemporary and historical art perspectives. Projects may include but not be limited to: drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, mixed media, ceramics, and sculpture. Students develop technical skills, foster their expressive abilities and employ the use of the elements and principles of art throughout the production process.

    A.V.I.D. -

    The AVID program is an year long academic elective that is present in all Pinellas County middle and high schools. Its philosophy is to place students in rigorous classes (advanced and/or high school credit classes),hold students accountable to the highest standards, provide academic and social support, all within the framework of college and career readiness.

    The AVID program coordinator and site team select students to become part of the AVID elective class. Student selection is based on test history (FSA Reading/Math scores), previous grades, and teacher recommendation.     Band -
    -The 3 band classes offered at SHMS are: Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced. Band offers the students the opportunity to learn an instrument that they may continue through high school, college, and beyond. No prior knowledge or skill is needed. Because these are performance based classes, the bands have a minimum of 2 mandatory performance opportunities a year. Older students will have more outlets for their abilities as well.
    -Beginning is for students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade who have either never played a band instrument before or took for a limited time in elementary school. You do not need to know ANYTHING about band. You will learn it all in the class.
    -Intermediate is for students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade who have played successfully for at least a full year in beginning band, took private lessons along with participating in the elementary program or have been in a weekly
    elementary program for 2 years. If you think your incoming 6th grader belongs in Intermediate band, please be sure to contact Safety Harbor Middle to set up an audition just after the 5th grade school year ends.
    -Advanced band is for 7th, and 8th grade students who have successfully completed 2 years in a band program. If your son/daughter comes from another school in Florida or out of state or has less than 2 years, he/she will need to audition to participate in this class.

    Business Education and Technology-
    Students build a business and technology foundation for career success.
    -Business Keyboarding: Students explore a variety of career paths and learn the importance of good career work habits, teamwork, and communication. Content includes keyboarding, the basics of word processing and presentation software, hardware, networks and the Internet.
    -Computer Applications in Business 1, 2 & 3: The content includes but is not limited to instruction in keyboarding, Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, computer hardware, Internet, digital design, web design, and soft skills for business applications.
    -Digital Information Technology (high school credit): The intention of this course is to prepare students to be successful both personally and professionally in an information based society. Digital Information Technology includes the exploration and use of: databases, the internet, spreadsheets, presentation applications, management of personal information and email, word processing and document manipulation, HTML, web page design, and the integration of these programs using software that meets industry standards.
    Chinese language is spoken by one-fifth of the world’s population. China’s world influence continues to grow, and it is increasingly important to prepare the next generation of young people with the language skills and expanded world view to compete and be successful in today’s global market. As one of 100 Confucius classrooms around the country, Chinese program at SHMS offers Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced Chinese classes to 6th, 7th and 8th students. 
    -Beginning Chinese is for students in 6th, 7th , and 8th grade who are at the early stage of learning Chinese. They use a limited number of isolated words, two or three-word phrases, and/or longer memorized expressions in familiar topic areas. They rely on pinyin most of the time.
    -Intermediate Chinese is for students in 6th , 7th , and 8th grade who can interpret new information and messages in new contexts when supported with contextual clues. They are able to handle a limited number of everyday social interactions. They are able to read and write Chinese characters with some help of pinyin.
    -Advanced Chinese is for 7th and 8th grade students who have a broad enough vocabulary for discussing social and academic topics, and understand speech at a normal rate. They are able to read and write short passages with minimal assistance.
    Chorus -
    Our choral program has developed a strong reputation in the community and beyond for outstanding performance. The program consists of four different choirs: Girls (grade 6), Boys (grades 6-8), Ladies (grades 7-8), and Mixed (grades 7-8). All choruses focus on the fundamentals of quality singing, reading music, and performing.

    TV Production -
    Technology mixed with creativity at its best. Produces our daily school news show, Newscan. Students learn hands on, real life job experience including learning the Tricaster system. Available to 7th and 8th grade students by application, which are available near the end of the school year for the following school year. Listen for announcements about applications.
    Yearbook -
    The yearbook elective is designed to teach students all of the journalism skills involved in creating a yearbook. They will be responsible as a team for developing a theme for the book each year.  They are taught that the yearbook they create will be cherished for years to come by the school and their peers so it is a big responsibility and requires that students we driven, motivated and ambitious! Students will use Herff Jones design software to develop spread layouts, creative graphics, and to write compelling articles and captions for their yearbook. Photography is also an important component of the class. Without captivating pictures our their book would be nothing! Marketing strategies are also taught and developed. The book is sold at the school and the class is treated like a business. It is a wonderful hands on experience of what it feels like to be part of a business or a real world journalism job.
