What is Battle of the Books?
The Battle of the Books is a fun way to get students to read a variety of books and learn to comprehend what they are reading. It is a great way to promote recreational reading. The program is a "quiz bowl" type of game in which teams try to answer questions about each of the 15 Sunshine State Young Readers Award (SSYRA) Books. Questions are based on plots, settings, characters, and literary devices. Participating students (in grades 3-5) are given several months to read the 15 books and quiz each other on what they have read. Qualifying tests are given during December-January. School battles will be held to determine which students will represent Midtown at the district battle in February. If you are interested, you can start reading the books over the summer. Scroll down for more information and read aloud videos of the books. Happy Reading!
Congratulations Midtown Mustangs Battle of the Books Team
South County Champions 2019-2020
This year’s 2019-2020 Battle of the Books was a huge success. Our Midtown Mustangs were focused, engaged and had a great time battling. The students collaborated as they searched the texts for evidence to support their responses.
Our team will receive the traveling trophy with Midtown Academy's name added to display at our school for the year. The students also recieved medals, new books and an official Battle of the Books T-Shirt. We are SO proud of them!
Check out the 2020-2021 list of SSYRA books that will be used for the next Battle of the Books. ANYONE can read the books, but the Battle is open to 3rd-5th graders. There is also a list of SSYRA Jr. books for grades K-2 to read, listen to and enjoy. Learn more about SSYRA here.
