    School Hours

    School hours are 8:35 a.m. to 2:35 p.m. Monday thru Friday.  Any student arriving after 8:35 is considered tardy and must sign in at the office before going to class.  Three unexcused tardies equals one unexcused absence.  Parents of students will be notified by the school when a child has 3 unexcused absences.  Additional unexcused absences will result in a mandatory conference with the principal and a possible TIP referral to the state attorney’s office.

    Students arriving before 8:05 a.m. or staying after 3:05 p.m. must be enrolled in the before and after school child care program.  School personnel cannot provide supervision before 8:05 a.m. or after 3:05 p.m.


    Students are expected to attend school daily.  Please notify the school if your child is ill and will be absent for several days.  When your child returns to school from an absence, he/she will be expected to provide a written excuse explaining the absence.  (Florida Statute 232.10) If you are planning to keep your child from school for any other reason, then a written request must be submitted to the school at least three (3) days prior to the absence. 


    All persons entering Lake St. George Elementary School must sign in at the office and get a volunteer or visitor’s badge.  This includes all volunteers as well as parents visiting their child’s classroom.  By contract teachers are to be given 24 hour advance notice to observe or visit a classroom.

    Lunch / Breakfast Program

    Breakfast and lunches are served in our cafeteria daily.  While the breakfast program is optional, children are required to participate in the school lunch program or bring a lunch from home.  Breakfast is free of charge for all students.  Breakfast is served from 8:05-8:35.

    The school must be notified of any food allergies.  Students allergic to milk must provide a note from their physician stating this fact.  It is the responsibility of the student to safeguard his/her lunch money.  As students frequently lose lunch money that might not be possible to replace, parents are encouraged to maintain an account for their child in the cafeteria.

    Checks should be made payable to Lake St. George Elementary School for the exact amount of the meals to be purchased.  Checks will not be accepted from parties who have had one bounced check.  Because of technology advances in banking, checks now clear two or three days of being presented for payment.  If you pay for school lunches by check, please be sure funds are in your account to cover that check when it is presented, not when you think it might clear.  If a check is returned for insufficient funds, your signature on the check gives the school district permission to take the original amount of money from your account electronically.  Payment by check means you agree with these terms.

    Lunch money should be given to the cafeteria manager before school.  Avoid packing or bringing to school carbonated drinks, candy, glass containers and containers with pull-off lids for small children.

    A limited fund is established to loan lunch money to children who have forgotten their money or lunch.  In order that funds will always be available when needed, parents are expected to reimburse the cafeteria the next school day.


    Arrival / Dismissal Procedures

    Transportation is provided to those students who live two (2) or more miles from the school or those students who have a bus provided for safety reasons.

    Pupils who are not eligible to ride a bus may not ride with a friend.  Pupils assigned to a bus may ride another bus home with a friend on that friend’s bus only if both parents have sent to the office written permission prior to the day.

    Bus riders who do not intend to ride the bus regularly must ride the bus at least one day during the first week so that the names can be given to the bus driver.  If students do not ride the bus for an extended period of time, there is a possibility their bus stop could be removed.

    Buses are referred to by colors.  Help your child learn the color for his/her bus.  If your child will not be riding the bus on a specific day, you must let the teacher know in writing.


    Car Riders

    For the safety of the children, we ask you to pick up your child at the car drive thru area promptly at school dismissal time (2:35 p.m.).  In the case of unexpected delay, please call to inform the office.

    Staff and safety patrols are on duty both before and after school for your child’s safety.  Please follow their directions.  Parking is not permitted anywhere in the front or back of the school except in marked parking spaces.  Please use the main crosswalk when crossing the car circle lanes.


    Walkers and Bicycle Riders

    Students who walk or ride bicycles to school are expected to obey all safety rules and use extreme care.  Students are required by law to wear a helmet while riding a bicycle.  They should go directly home from school after dismissal.


    Dress Code

    Students must adhere to the School Board approved dress code contained in the Code of Student Conduct.  Safe and appropriate shoes must be worn.  Hats and sunglasses are permitted only on the physical education field except with permission from an administrator.  Appropriate undergarments must be worn at all times; no underwear should be visible.  All shirts, tops and dresses must have sleeves and cover the shoulder.  Shorts, skirts and dresses must be hemmed and be mid-thigh length or longer. 

    Bandanas and sweatbands are not allowed.



    Parents and members of the community are encouraged to volunteer their services to the school.  Help is needed with clerical duties, clinic, tutoring, and working in the media center and in the classroom.  All volunteers must be registered with the district.  Please call the office at 669-1161 for more information.


    Parent Conferences

    Each teacher will hold a Back to School event as well as a minimum of one individual conference with each student’s parents / guardian.  Additional conferences may be scheduled by calling or writing the school for an appointment.  Please be considerate of the conference scheduling needs of other parents when requesting additional conferences.  Please sign in at the school office before going to the classroom for a conference.



    Each student is provided a copy of the Pinellas County Code of Student Conduct each year.  Parents are to review this information with their children, paying particular attention to the sections on student absence, student conduct, disciplinary action and procedures, and dress code.

    Commitment to Character traits are taught and practiced at LSG.  Each classroom develops expectations which provide guidelines for appropriate behavior.  Should a student consistently break the rules in the classroom or cause a severe disruption, he/she will visit an administrator.  You will be informed of the misconduct by a discipline notice.  This notice must be signed and returned to school the next day.


    Field Trips

    Each child must return a county approved permission form signed by the parent or guardian prior to the designated due date in order to attend any field trips.  Transportation for trips will be provided by buses or cars.  A student may be asked to have a parent accompany them on an off-site field trip if there are behavior concerns.  No children may attend a field trip unless they are part of the group for whom the trip was arranged.

    Classroom Parties

    According to Health Department policies, all food served to students must be prepared in a commercial bakery.  No homemade goods may be served to students.  Parents wishing to provide refreshments for a birthday celebration must obtain teacher approval and adhere to the teacher’s schedule.   


    Communicable Diseases

    If your child is suspected of having a communicable disease, you will be contacted and expected to take your child home.  In the case of head lice or similar infestation, a child must show evidence of treatment before he/she can be admitted to school.

    Please note the following School Board Policy:

    Communicable Diseases: Any student who is suspected of having a communicable disease shall be referred immediately to the County Health Department or a licensed physician.  If such communicable disease is verified, the student shall not be permitted to return to school until the disease has been arrested and so verified by the County Health Department or a licensed physician. (Policy 6GX52-42.17)



    School Board policy states: “School personnel may administer prescription medication only to those students who have an official authorization form signed by the parent on file at the school.  Such a form shall indicate the kind of medication, quantity, time to be given and the termination date.  Over the counter drugs may be administered to the students only when prescribed by a physician on the ‘Administration of Medication’ form.  All medication to be administered at school must be delivered by the parent in the original container.  All medication must be stored in the school office and administered by trained personnel”.  The ‘Administration of Medication’ forms are available at the school office.


    Custodial / Non-Custodial Parents

    Both parents shall have full rights to participate in their children’s school activities.  Parents or guardians of students who have court orders that limit or prevent access to school records or the children shall provide a verified copy of such documentation to the school officials.  The non-residential parent may not remove the child from school without the knowledge and consent of the residential parent unless the school is furnished with a certified copy of a court order that specifically permits the non-residential parent to remove the child from school.


    Instructional Materials

    Teachers use a variety of instructional materials in order to give the students the best learning experience.  Materials include computer software programs, hands on manipulatives and various printed materials including textbooks, trade books and periodicals.  Students are to care for the materials and if lost, damaged or destroyed, they must be paid for as prescribed by law.  There may be no further issuance if amount is assessed and not paid. (School Board Policy CGX-8.0)


    Homework Policy

    We believe that children need to develop socially, physically and emotionally, as well as intellectually.  After school social, family and sports related activities are important to help children develop well-rounded personalities.  With this in mind, teachers give careful consideration to homework assignments.  Our homework objectives are: to reinforce learning that has taken place at school, to develop independent self-disciplined learners, to help increase student academic achievement, and to communicate to parents what skills the student is learning.  Teachers will share their homework policy with all parents at the Back to School night.



    Emergency messages only will be delivered to students.  It is the parent’s responsibility to inform their children of after school dismissal changes or problems.


    Disaster Plan

    The following drills are conducted regularly:  fire, duck and cover, evacuation and lockdown.


    Physical Education Exemption

    Lack of participation in the physical education program due to a medical condition must be reported to the school by a note from a physician or parent.



    To access your child’s grades on Portal, you must have a user ID.  Stop by the office during weekdays to obtain your user ID. 


    Progress Reports

    Report cards for students in grades K – 5 are distributed four (4) times a year.  Unsatisfactory progress will be communicated through conferences and interim progress reports.  Parents should also review students’ weekly papers.


    Prohibited Items

    Students are not permitted to bring gum, glass containers, weapons or dangerous objects to school.  Pets may be brought to school only for “Show and Tell” or class projects with prior approval from an administrator.  Staff members will not be responsible for valuables:  watches, radios, cell phones, video game players, etc.  Cell phones must be turned off and kept out of sight.  Cell phones found to be turned on in class will result in the phone being confiscated for pick up by the parent.



    The use of the office phones will be limited to emergencies only.  Permission to go home with a friend or a request for forgotten homework does not constitute emergencies.


    Student Information Updates

    It is very important that we have current telephone numbers (home and work), address and emergency contact person’s name and phone number.  Please notify the school office as soon as a change occurs.


    Newsletters and Notices

    School newsletters will be sent home on a monthly basis.  Notices / flyers will be sent home as the need arises.  Many teachers send home all notices and student work on Fridays.  The PTA monthly newsletter will be sent home regularly throughout the school year.
