SUMMER SPOTLIGHT: STUDENT ATHLETICS

2026 St. Petersburg High Girls Basketball Team

 

Pinellas County Schools is celebrating the powerful impact of Athletics this summer as part of the Florida’s Future: Powered by Public Schools campaign. Across the district, student‑athletes are showcasing remarkable excellence, teamwork, and dedication—demonstrating how sports help shape confident, capable learners.

Preparing Students for the Future

From championship courts to practice fields, Pinellas County Schools students continue to shine thanks to programs designed to support the whole student. Participation in athletics builds discipline, resilience, and collaboration—skills that prepare students not only for competition, but for success in college, careers, and life.

Excellence in Athletics

Athletics made headlines across the district. The St. Petersburg High School girls basketball team made history with its first-ever trip to the Class 5A Final Four—a testament to their determination, unity, and school pride. These milestones reflect the district’s commitment to creating pathways that connect learning to life, opening doors to college, careers, and beyond.

At the same time, the Boca Ciega High School Pirates returned to the state Final Four for the first time since 2002, an exciting moment for both the program and the Gulfport community. And momentum is building at every level: elementary and middle school sports continue to expand with indoor soccer clubs, ball hockey, volleyball, and more opportunities for young athletes to grow. These accomplishments demonstrate how public schools truly power Florida’s future, shaping well-rounded students who are ready to lead.  Learn more about PCS Athletics

Protecting Every Athlete, Prioritizing Heart Safety 

Starting in the 2026–2027 school year, Florida’s Second Chance Act requires all high school student‑athletes to complete an ECG/EKG before their first participation in grades 9–12 athletic events. This screening helps detect hidden heart conditions that can lead to sudden cardiac arrest.  Learn more about ECG/EKG Requirements
