A Brief Overview
Founded in 1968, the Literacy Council of St. Petersburg is an all volunteer non-profit organization dedicated to teaching adults to read. We are affiliated with the Florida Literacy Coalition, ProLiteracy America, VALF (Volunteers for Adult Literacy Florida), READ Pinellas, and the Pinellas County Schools-Adult Education.
The Literacy Council will tutor any adult reading at an 8th grade level or below free of charge. Tutoring is conducted one-on-one at many south county locations: Dixie Hollins Adult Education Center, Lakewood Community School, Clearwater Adult Education Center, Pinellas Technical College - both campuses, Northeast Community School and Tomlinson Adult Learning Center. We also tutor at area libraries.
Students find out about the Literacy Council from many sources, among them: the Florida Literacy Coalition, Dollar General, television and radio stations, newspaper articles, the St. Petersburg Library system, the ABE/GED programs in the Pinellas County Schools and by other students.
The Literacy Council conducts Tutor Training Workshops 3-4 times a year. We conduct Board meetings on the 3rd Tuesday every other month. These meetings are open to all. Visit us at www.stpetereads.com for a complete calendar of events.
