Hello Tarpon Springs Students, Parents, and Community

I am Ronnie Mason your proud principal of Tarpon Springs Middle School.  October 11, 2022, I joined the Tarpon Springs family and my first week was fantastic.  Thank you so much to everyone for making me feel so welcome.

I wanted to take some time to share a little about myself. This school year I am entering my 28th year in education, and during my career I have worked as a teacher, school counselor, and school administrator.  Before joining Pinellas County Schools, I worked for Hillsborough County Public Schools where I spent the last 7 years as principal at Hill Middle School.  My undergraduate and graduate work was completed at the University of South Florida where I earned a degree in Education, as well as masters in School Counseling and Educational Leadership.

On a personal note, when I am away from school, I love to spend time reading, exercising, and enjoying outdoor activities.  I recently took up the sport Pickleball, and I am currently looking for a good location to play close to school.  A lot of my time is also spent running around with my golden retriever, named “Bear”.

My goal is to create learning experiences for every student that develop lifelong learners and good citizens.  My belief is that the foundation for all this work is rooted in positive relationships with all stakeholders.

I am so grateful for the opportunity to lead Tarpon Springs Middle School.

    Go Spartans!

    Ronald  Mason

    Principal

Progress Monitoring 1 (PM 1): Most of our students completed the PM1.  I am thrilled with our initial results and am grateful for the supportive conversations that I have already had with our students and our families.  Per the PCS communication that went out Saturday, results can be accessed via the “Reports” tab in FOCUS.  It is our goal that students show growth between each progress monitoring assessment.

Reading is critical.  It is important students read at least 30 minutes per day.  If your child struggles to read in one sitting, it is okay to break the reading down into chunks of time, but please remember, we must work together to build endurance.

If 30 minutes is too much, start with having your student read 10 minutes.  Set the timer, have your child read, and then ask them what they read about.  This will help build the fluency and comprehension skills needed to be on grade level! I am also working to provide families with benchmark-specific activities your student can do at home for both math and ELA.

Open House: Thursday, September 8th: We listened to feedback given from all school stakeholders, and to accommodate our busy families we will follow a true “open house” model where doors open at 5:00 pm and close at 6:30 pm.   This allows families to come in, check out classrooms/meet teachers, and leave at their convenience.  This also allows our families with more than one student to visit teachers for all students if needed. Please look at FOCUS for your student’s schedule, teacher information, and room numbers.

A message from our PTSA President: On behalf of the PTSA, we would like to welcome all of you back to school and hope everyone is having a great first few weeks! Please like and visit our Facebook page at  https://www.facebook.com/tsmsptsa and also sign up at https://tarponspringsmiddle.memberhub.com  to stay updated on upcoming meetings, volunteer opportunities, fund-raising events, etc. Mark your calendar now for our next PTSA meeting on September 20 @ 6:30pm through Zoom. Progress Monitoring 1 (PM 1): Students will take PM 1 for math this week. We will send additional information once all results are in. Please make sure your student gets plenty of rest and tries their best!

Please review the IXL score with your child as you will also be able to see specific benchmarks they need to work on!

Congratulations to our students who made the boys’ and girls’ volleyball teams! I look forward to a fantastic season. I also saw many of our students in their football jerseys, so I hope jamboree weekend went well for our student athletes.

    Good afternoon, Spartan Families,

Happy July! The 2022 – 2023 school year begins five weeks from today, and I cannot wait! I hope everyone is completing their summer reading and practicing their multiplication facts as the rest of summer will fly, and we need our students ready to learn when they return August 10th.

We have a lot to celebrate with 71% of our 7th grade students demonstrating proficiency in BOTH math and ELA, an increase in our science achievement levels, and an 18-point gain in civics!!!! I cannot wait to share the rest of our school data once results become official.  Please know I am so proud of our students, and am grateful we continue to excel as a school community.

Please remember we are still following summer hours.  Please email tsms@pcsb.org if you cannot reach someone via phone in the main office, as many of our clerks are off until the end of July.

Thank you for your continuous support.

    Sincerely,
