10th Grade Students Learn About Civil Rights History

Tenth grade students from Gibbs High School in St. Petersburg were among the nearly 1-thousand high school students from Pinellas County Schools to visit the Beaches, Benches, and Boycotts: The Civil Rights Movement in Tampa Bay exhibit at The Florida Holocaust Museum. The Civil Rights movement in the bay area had its own struggles with racial equality and its own successes thanks to local leaders who made a difference in Tampa Bay. The field trip to the museum helped students connect the Civil Rights events from across the country with similar events closer to home. In addition, the students were treated to hear a presentation from Mr. Leon Jackson, the sole surviving member of the "Courageous 12" a group of St. Petersburg Police officers who stood up for civil rights during the 1960's.
