A Message from Mrs. Hughes-Leeks

Greetings Phoenix Families,

This is your principal, Tamika Hughes-Leeks calling to welcome you back for the 2020-21 school year.  We are excited to engage our scholars and anticipate success whether face-to-face or through My PCS Online.  Our staff has been preparing for your return and our district leadership has been working to ensure that our facilities are sanitized and safe. Parents, we want all of our Scholars in attendance the first day and we want them to strive for perfect attendance each month!  Please bring your supplies on the first day of school.

1st DAY OF SCHOOL UPDATES

We want to provide a few updates regarding the 1st day of school.  Student hours for the 2020-21 school year are 7:15 AM-1:45 PM.  Our office hours are 6:30 AM- 2:30 PM.  Scholars riding the bus will enter the campus through the bus circle and report to his/her designated wing for check-in.  Scholars who walk to school or are car riders will enter the campus in the car circle until 7:10 AM.  He/she will walk to the bus circle and check-in at the appropriate wing.  Late students will report to the main office for check-in.

SCHOOL MEALS

School breakfast is available at 6:55 AM daily and lunch begins at 1:15 PM.  Disston Academy is again a Community Eligibility Program school so breakfast, lunch and afternoon snack are free for all of our scholars.

DRESS FOR SUCCESS

All Scholars are expected to be dressed for success by complying with the dress code policy.  Scholars are required to wear a face mask, five will be supplied by PCS.  Scholars are expected to wear khaki bottoms that meet the dress code requirement, polo-style shirts (long or short sleeve) in red, gray or white.  Shirt logos must be small (quarter size), no larger than 1 inch by 1 inch.  Scholars are also required to wear shoes with a heel covering.  Please see our Dress Code policy in entirety on our school website at www.pcsb.org/Disston .  Please contact our social worker, Ms. Pippert if there is any clothing hardship and we will connect you with Clothes for Kids.  Scholars will not be permitted in class if not appropriately dressed for success.

TRANSPORTATION

Bus information was distributed by mail directly from the transportation department.  If you have questions or concerns regarding bus transportation, please call (727)587-2020.

SCHOOL HEALTH SERVICES UPDATES

All 7th grade scholars are required to meet immunization requirements for traditional in-person schooling.  Please be sure to provide proof to Ms. Dawson, our DMT.  Scholars without proof of immunization will be ineligible to attend school in the traditional setting.

Parents we want to reiterate that by sending your scholar to school you have made a good faith assessment of his/her health.  Please review our district website and our 1st day of school packets regarding School Health Services.

REGISTRATIONS AND WITHDRAWALS

New students and parents wishing to withdraw scholars should set an appointment to meet with our DMT, Ms. Dawson.  Appointments will need be to scheduled in advance and may be held in person or through TEAMS, a digital platform. 

SCHEDULE CHANGES

We will continue to adjust our schedules during the week of August 24-29, 2020.  This will allow us to keep the number of students in each class to an optimal level.  This will also allow students to make schedule adjustments as needed.  If you have questions about your scholars’ schedules please contact the appropriate grade level counselor.  A listing of counselors is available of our website.

TECHNOLOGY AND MEAL DISTRIBUTION

Scholars enrolled in MY PCS Online at Disston Academy are eligible for a laptop to support this educational opportunity.  Device pick-up is available daily between the hours of 8 AM-2 PM.  An adult must be present to sign for and receive the device and the scholar must be present to log-in prior to receipt.  Scholars enrolled in MY PCS Online at Disston Academy are also eligible for weekly meal distribution.  Five days of food will be provided for breakfast, lunch, and an afternoon snack weekly.  Meals will be distributed at Disston Academy from 11 AM- Noon every Friday. Last but most importantly, parents, we want to make sure that you continue to receive updated school and district information so please update your contact data in Focus. You can receive phone calls and it is recommended that you opt-in to receive emails and text messages.  Get updated at pcsb.org/contact info. The most up to date information will be posted on the Disston Academy website, please check it at least weekly at www.pcsb.org/Disston.
