Two Pinellas students competed in the National History Day (NHD) competition. Darian Grob of Dunedin Highland Middle School and Eleanor Nartker of Palm Harbor University High School qualified after winning first and second place in the Florida History Competition.

Darian competed in the Junior Individual Documentary category with his project “Marvin Gaye: A Soulful Cry for Rights, A Burden of Responsibility.” Guided by teacher Teresa Bergstrom, Darian’s project was a finalist in the category. His project was also recognized as the Outstanding Entry from Florida.

Eleanor competed in the Senior Individual Performance category with her project “Te Tiriti o Waitangi: A History of Māori Land Rights.” Her teacher is Andreas Mandelos.

This year, 20 middle and high school projects from across Florida were represented at the national competition.

In addition, Amanda Dogu from St. Petersburg High School was a finalist for the Patricia Behring Teacher of the Year Award.

Each year, students around the world discover history through National History Day® by creating historical research projects. Through the process, students develop skills in communication, project management, and historical thinking.
