Pinellas County Schools proudly announces Kristy James, Principal of Ponce de Leon Elementary, as the 2025-26 Principal of the Year, and Brooke Crandall, Assistant Principal of Madeira Beach Fundamental, as the 2025-26 Assistant Principal of the Year.

Principal Kristy James leads Ponce de Leon Elementary, a school with a longstanding reputation for excellence in education, outstanding parental involvement, and sustained community engagement. Always looking to grow, she regularly invites district staff to her campus to provide feedback and insight on how she can better the student experience.

"Kristy James is a remarkable visionary leader. She approaches every decision with intention and a deep commitment to helping those around her succeed. During my time working with her, I’ve witnessed staff, teachers, administrators, and district coaches seek her guidance—and each time, they leave feeling inspired and empowered to improve their own practice," said Assistant Principal Chelsea Smith. "Not only is Mrs. James a wealth of knowledge, but she is always looking to elevate her own professional growth. I feel honored to have the opportunity to lead alongside such an incredible leader."

Assistant Principal Brooke Crandall has been an educator in the district for more than 20 years. She has been recognized for her dedication to student achievement and her leadership at Madeira Beach Fundamental, which recently earned an A grade for the 2024–25 school year—a reflection of the school’s collective commitment to excellence.

"As an Assistant Principal, Mrs. Crandall's leadership style is focused on building relationships with students, faculty, and community. Through these relationships, she has been able to grow and develop amazing teachers that deliver exceptional instruction to our students," said Madeira Beach Principal Melissa Athanson. "She is the type of leader that people are eager to follow and respect. She is always willing to help, pitch in, lend a shoulder or anything else you need."

Please join us in celebrating these two outstanding educators for their leadership, passion, and unwavering dedication to the students and families of Pinellas County Schools.
