Lakewood High School head football coach Cory Moore and Health/Avid teacher Chantella Moore – brother and sister - were recognized at the SHAPE Florida Conference Center in Kissimmee on Nov. 29.
SHAPE Florida is a statewide professional association for kindergarten through 12th grade health and physical education educators. Each year teachers who go above and beyond for students and provide good leadership are recognized.
“Of course, I’m excited to win an award in the state,” Mr. Moore said.
Mrs. Moore was named physical education teacher of the year while Coach Moore was named sports educator of the year. She said she is very proud of the moment she and her brother shared being recognized for helping students at Lakewood.
“I’m proud to represent Lakewood High School. … It’s nice to be recognized for helping the students. I treat them as if they are my own,” Mrs. Moore said.
“I was more happy for her because the hard work she puts in,” Mr. Moore said.
The process started in 2017 to figure out who would be considered, and the brother and sister combination were picked out of the whole state of Florida.
“I feel very proud and excited we had a brother and sister duo to represent our school,” principal Erin Savage said.
The physical education teacher of the year award is hosted once a year. Not only were the Moores recognized for their excellent teaching abilities, they also got to have fun.
“If I was to go to a conference I must read books, but they got to do things the students would do… basically play games all day,” Savage said.
