Classroom Environments

What will the classroom environment look like?

  • Student desks are socially distanced and non-essential furniture has been removed.
  • Environments will be positive and welcoming.
  • Resources will be available for students at a capacity that allows for social distancing.
  • Technology integration will be utilized.


Will my student need to wear a mask?

  • Yes, students will be expected to wear masks at all times.
  • Teachers will support mask breaks when appropriate and safe.
  • Teachers will explicitly teach and reinforce mask etiquette.


Will my student be able to wash and/or sanitize their hands?

  • Yes, students will have access to locations to wash and/or use hand sanitizer regularly.


What will teaching and learning look like for my student?

  • Students will be able to use classroom resources, these will be rotated out and cleaned as needed.
  • Within the implementation of social distancing teachers will provide meaningful and engaging standards based lessons that support student achievement and social emotional growth.
  • Student collaboration will continue as it’s a fundamental part of learning and social/emotional growth.
  • Classroom movement will be lessened, but monitoring for understanding will continue as an important part of the learning process.



PPE/Campus Resources


  • Masks are to be worn all of the time
  • Mask Breaks:
    • Students can take masks off and put their heads down so they can breathe downward rather than out.
    • Can occur if students are outside and students can safely distance following teacher guidance.
    • Teachers can schedule mask breaks to support classroom needs.
    • Parent contact will be made to support a student who is struggling with wearing a mask.
    • Students who refuse to wear a mask may be assigned to an alternative instructional option.
    • There are times a self-regulated mask break is in order.  Students will be taught if while in class, they need a 30 second reprieve from the mask that they can appropriately pull it down and then put it back on.  
  • When in close proximity, working in a group, large crowds, moving through the hallways, that the mask should remain on. 
  • Reminders, signage, practice for mask usage will be clearly articulated and demonstrated.
  • Alternative Face Coverings must be approved by a doctor. Please e-mail your child’s teacher or call the office to request a form. 



Water Access

  • It is recommended that students bring their own water bottle to school. Bottles should be clearly labeled.
  • A water bottle filling station is located at the water fountain in the cafeteria.


Hand sanitizer

  • All classrooms will be provided hand sanitizer. Families may also donate sanitizer to support classrooms and common areas.
  • Students may have individual hand sanitizers and will be expected to use them appropriately.


Hand washing

  • Sinks and hand washing stations (sanitizer) are located in classrooms and across the campus for increased access.
  • Teachers will take time to teach handwashing skills. This can also be supported by families at home.
  • Time will be provided for students to wash/sanitize hands throughout the school day.


Clinic/Sick Room

  • Belcher will have a designated location for the clinic for traditional care and a location for students who are experience Covid-19 symptoms. Please see additional information in the Clinic section below.


Student Arrival

Morning Arrival Processes:

  • All students must have their mask on when they arrive on campus at the bus circle, car circle, and walking gates.
  • Only school staff should be on campus. Parents, volunteers, and mentors are not permitted on campus during arrival.
  • Students are permitted on campus 30 minutes before the beginning of school. It is imperative that all families respect this request. Parents and students may enter campus at 8:15 am. 
  • Arrival time 8:15 am, Breakfast gate opens at 8:15 am.


Entry Locations & Breakfast:


  • Pre-K – Car Circle - Recess Field Gate:
    • Pre-K Students: Signage for social distancing will be placed in designated spaces along the sidewalk for Pre-K parents. Families wait using social distancing to sign their child in with a Pre-K staff member at the recess field gate off the front car circle. Breakfast will be served in the classroom.
    • 8:15 am Teachers will receive students at the recess field
    • One teacher will have parents sign in at the table and the other teachers and staff will supervise students in recess area.
    • 8:45 am Teachers will escort students to the classroom via bus circle
    • Breakfast will be delivered to classrooms


  • Self-Contained ESE Students:
    • Students will report directly to classrooms as soon as they arrive on campus. Breakfast will be served in classrooms.


  • Car Circle
    • All adults MUST remain in their vehicle while in the car circle.
    • PreK families may park in the front lot, then use the crosswalk to walk students to the recess field gate for drop off.
    • Kindergarten- Students will enter the café from the south door of the café facing the car circle. Kindergarten teachers will pick up students from the café each morning. 
    • Kindergarten and 1st Grade- Students will enter the café from the south door of the café facing the car circle. First grade teachers will pick up students from the café the first two days of school.  Following the first two days, 1st grade students will eat breakfast in the café and then go directly to classrooms.
    • 2nd 3rd, 4th, 5th Grade- Students will proceed down the sidewalk in front of the office and enter the gate South of the office, using social distance protocol and go directly to the breakfast cart line or the PE court. Breakfast will be available from the cart from 8:15-8:40 am.  All students will finish breakfast before reporting to classrooms, but they will finish breakfast no later than 8:44 am in order to make it to class on time. 
    • Classroom doors will be open for students to enter as soon as they finish breakfast. Students that do not wish to eat school breakfast may report directly to class. 


  • Bike Rack:
    • Signage will be posted to maintain social distancing protocols in bike rack. Students will drop off their bike at the bike rack, then enter through the main gate south the office building for 2nd – 5th grades, or Kindergarten and 1st grade students will enter the café.



8:15 a.m. Gates Open for Breakfast

8:15 a.m. – 8:40 a.m.  Breakfast Served (Breakfast line closes at 8:40 am, except for students on late busses.)


  • Pre-K
    • 8:15 am Teachers will receive students at the recess field
    • One teacher will have parents sign in at the table and the other teachers and staff will supervise students in recess area.
    • 8:45 am Teachers will escort students to the classroom via bus circle
    • Breakfast will be delivered to classrooms
  • Grades K-1
    • 8:15 am Students will report to the cafeteria for breakfast and arrival.
    • Tables will be labeled for each Kindergarten class to sit. Kindergarten teachers will escort students to the classroom at 8:30 am.  Remaining Kindergarten students will be walked to class at 8:43 am by a staff member. 
    • First grade students will report directly to class after finishing breakfast.
  • Grades 2-5
    • 8:15 am Students will enter through the gate south of the office
    • Breakfast will be on the cart outside building 4 for students
    • All students will be seated in grade level lines on the covered court for breakfast and arrival.
    • 8:30 am Students will be dismissed to classrooms by grade level
  • Rain back up- students will use sidewalk outside building 4 and building 9

8:40 a.m.  All Students Report Directly to Class


What if students arrive at school prior to 8:15 a.m.?

  • The parents of students who are observed arriving at school prior to 8:15 a.m. will be contacted by an administrator to provide additional resources if needed, and/or to be informed of our safety protocols.



Transitions, Recess, LIC


  • Students should walk in line 6 feet apart to the best of their ability under teacher direction.
  • Signage will be present in hallways to support social distancing and students will be explicitly taught these expectations by their classroom teacher.
  • Teachers should designate a line leader and train them to lead the class while the classroom teacher walks at the end of the line to monitor that social distancing is being met.
  • Students are wearing masks during all transition times.

  • Students can use recess as time to get fresh air, experience a mask break, and maintain social distancing while having their recess time.
  • Students will have lanyards for their masks and should maintain wearing their lanyards while at recess. Teachers will teach recess guidelines for personal space during recess and it is the expectation that students follow these guidelines during recess.


Media Center

  • A plan will be created to support checking out books to support literacy.



Lunch & The Cafeteria Plan


  • The cafeteria is set up so that students can eat while maintaining social distancing.
  • Students will not wear masks while eating, but will have mask lanyards on so that masks are readily available.
  • Students will be provided the lunch options that have been outlined by the county.
  • Lunch will be served through the existing serving line.
  • PreK and self-contained ESE classrooms will have lunches delivered to their classrooms.




All lunches will be pre-packaged and available via a bag, clamshell box or a wrapped serving plate.  Students will have a choice of:

  • a hot entrée, cold sandwich, peanut butter and jelly, or an entrée salad
  • choice of milk flavor
  • fruit and vegetable



Student Dismissal

How will students be dismissed?

  • All students are expected to use social distancing, wear masks and follow adult directions during dismissal.
  • There will be a staggered dismissal process to ensure social distancing and limit foot traffic through the hallways:
  • Upon dismissal students are expected to quickly and safely leave the campus-no additional stops along the way.


Dismissal Procedures

2:40-2:50 pm

  • Pre-K dismissal from the car circle
  • First 2 days – dismissal will begin at 2:30 pm for Pre-K


2:50 pm

  • Bus riders are to be watching the tv for silent dismissal
  • YMCA is dismissed to cafeteria
  • Bike riders and walkers are dismissed


2:55 pm

  • Car riders in grades 1-5 are dismissed to designated seating out front of the school
    • Kindergarten- seated outside of recess gate
    • 1st grade- seated outside of entrance to cafeteria
    • 2nd grade- seated outside of exit to cafeteria
    • 3rd grade- seated by flag
    • 4th grade- seated by entrance to school
    • 5th grade- seated near the bike rack gate
  • First 2 days – dismissal will begin at 2:40 pm for car riders







The Traditional Clinic Space

  • Classroom staff will address common minor complaints in the classroom environment to the greatest extent possible.
  • Students requiring daily medications will receive their medications from the school nurse/trained office staff in the classroom, to minimize traffic through campus.
  • Whenever possible, students needing nursing procedures (tube feedings, catheterizations) will have them done in or near the classroom. o If a procedure is unable to be done in/near the classroom, the school nurse will escort the student to and from the traditional clinic space.
  • Students with asthma will not be permitted to use nebulizers, due to the potential for aerosolized particles to spread around the environment.
  • Students with diabetes who need the nurse for insulin injection, or who need adult supervision to perform their diabetes care tasks, will be supported in the classroom.
  • Schools should provide classroom staff with resources to support minor complaints or injuries in the classroom.
  • School nurses will carry a “Go-Bag” with them when traveling to see students in classrooms.
  • To support the cohorting of students and minimize traffic around campus, classroom staff should contact the school nurse or front office for any student who may need further evaluation in the classroom.
  • Only students needing close observation or immediate pick-up will be allowed in the well clinic. Examples may include: injuries, medical complications due to a known medical diagnosis.


Medication Drop-Off at School

  • Appointments will be necessary for parents to drop off medications at school.
  • The school nurse should meet the parent/designee outside of the school to avoid congregating in the front office. Physical distancing must be practiced always.
  • All other medication procedures remain unchanged.


  • The State of Florida has not waived any immunization requirements for the 20/21 school year.
    • Incoming Kindergarten students must be up to date for age/grade level.
  • School Health Services will allow a temporary 30-day exemption for parents to meet the immunization requirements, recognizing that some students may have fallen behind on childhood vaccines due to COVID-19.
    • After 30 days, the student must be excluded from school by law.
  • As MyPCS Online is an extension of traditional brick-and-mortar public school, all students enrolled in this learning option are required to have the appropriate vaccines as well.

Required Student Health Screenings

  • For the 20/21 school year, only vision and hearing screenings will be performed on students in KG, 1st, 3rd, and 6th
    • BMI and Scoliosis screenings have been waived by the State due to the inability to physically distance.
  • School nurses and school staff can reference the document titled “COVID Screening Procedures” for information on specific screening procedures.

Student Becomes Ill at School

Based upon recommendations from the Department of Health, the following illness guidelines will apply for symptoms that may be associated with COVID-19.  Students may also be sent home for symptoms not associated with COVID-19 as in past year (e.g.; unidentified rash, head injury).

Send home for ONE of the following

Send home for TWO or MORE of the following

·         Fever ≥100.4°F via no-contact thermometer

·         Cough (new or worsening)

·         Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing

·         Vomiting (one episode)

·         Diarrhea (one episode)

·         Chills

·         Fatigue

·         Muscle/body aches

·         Headache

·         New decrease in taste or smell

·         Sore throat

·         New congestion or runny nose

·         Nausea


  • If a teacher has a concern regarding a student in their classroom, the teacher is to contact the school nurse. The school nurse will come to the classroom and assess the student in the hallway.  The school nurse will then determine the next steps based upon the student’s needs at the time.
    • If the school nurse is not available, the teacher should contact trained front office staff.
    • Trained office staff should use the flowchart titled “Recommendations for Students with Symptoms” to aid in decision-making. For any concerns, staff should consult with school administration and/or the School Health Services department for assistance in determining next steps.
  • If the school nurse/staff member determines a student needs the isolation room while awaiting pick-up, the student must wear a surgical mask.
    • Do not place a mask on anyone who is unconscious or having difficulty breathing, anyone who is incapacitated or unable to remove their mask, or anyone who cannot tolerate a mask due to developmental, medical, or behavioral concerns.
