Lakewood baseball Coach Cory Scott was suspended for six weeks and fined $250 for telling the umpire “you missed another g--damn call” during a game against Boca Ciega High School, said Deb Fabrizio, Lakewood's assistant principal for athletics. The incident happened during the game on March 21 at Boca Ciega.

Scott was immediately thrown from the game, and later the umpire sent a report to the Florida High School Athletic Association, which ordered the suspension along with the fine, Fabrizio said. The suspension started on March 21st and will end on May 2nd.

Fabrizio said she was disappointed in the way the FHSAA was handling this, though she said, “I’m not trying to stir the pot with them.”

Assistant Coach Jayce Ganchou, who has taken the role as interim head coach, also said he was disappointed in the suspension.

“In the heat of the moment the coach may have to go out and check with the umpire. Sometimes when you go out, you’re a little heated. In this case it wasn’t that he went out heated. It’s what he said,” said Ganchou.

He said Scott’s behavior did not warrant a six-week suspension.

“I’ve seen other arguments between umpires and coaches that got far more heated up, that only got two-week suspensions and lesser fines,” he said.

Some players also disagree with the penalty.

"I think it's wrong because I feel they are making an example out of him to show the other coaches that they (FHSAA) are in charge," said senior Tyler Bentley, a pitcher for the team.
