Kid Cudi’s 15-track debut album Man on the Moon is more than just any ordinary album; it’s more of a personal and emotional journey of one man. A movie-like album, the idea behind it is all the songs take place during a night of sleep for Kid Cudi.
The album involves a narrator (rapper Common) and five acts. The first act is called “The end of the day” where Cudi finally lays down to sleep. The first song on the album, known as the Cudder Anthem, is where listeners learn the only place that Kid Cudi feels safe is in his dreams. Through all the acts, Cudi faces problems with nightmares, drugs, being stuck and finding happiness. “A new beginning’’ is the final act. The closing track Up Up & Away is where Cudi awakes from his slumber and decides to move on in the world. He also realizes that people are going to judge him no matter what he does.
This album has a techno-rhythm-rap feel, and although many may criticize Cudi for not being as lyrical as Lil Wayne, what this album does have is emotion and meaning. The song Heart of a Lion, for example, shows the inner battles that mostly everyone goes through in their life. The “no’s” and “yeah’s” in the hook show Kid Cudi’s confusion. Alive is a song that shows the new style Cudi is trying to produce.
There are some songs I feel shouldn’t be on the album such as Hyeer Up, which is more about smoking and being high, and Make Her Say with cameos from Kanye West and Common, which has a lighter melody when you put it with all the other emotional songs on the CD.
The spaceship has finally landed, and Kid Cudi has greeted the world. You can’t get enough of The Man On The Moon.
