Ridgecrest Elementary school receives national recognition for character education

By Lorri Helfand

Ridgecrest Elementary School received the National Promising Practice Award for exemplary work in character education. This award from the National Character Education Partnership in Washington D.C. highlights effective strategies that develop good character in young people. Awards were received by schools, districts, and organizations throughout the country as well as Canada, China, Colombia, and Mexico. Ridgecrest is the only school in the district to receive the recognition.

This year’s winning practices include unique anti-bullying programs, creative ways to integrate character and academic subjects, effective strategies for developing student leadership, and activities that build community, within the school and beyond.
Ridgecrest Elementary was recognized for their work in growing civic-minded student leaders through student-led action research. The model created at Ridgecrest allows students to research topics relating to problems in society and propose solutions that they help carry out.
