Black History Month is celebrated at Lakewood in a unique way. While the school pays tribute to those who have paved the way for many boys and girls, Lakewood also recognizes dedicated students who show their appreciation by helping out in the community in any way they can.
SNN interviewed some of this year’s honorees and here’s what they had to say:
Senior Naadirah Davis
“Being honored for this award makes me feel great, because honestly I do a lot for teachers,” Davis said. Davis is senior class president at Lakewood. She is also in Quill & Scroll, the national journalism honor society, the Center for Journalism and Multimedia, Students Rights and Responsibility committee, Student Government Association and the College Reach out Program (CROP). She is also vice president of the Principal’s Multicultural Advisory Committee and a Varsity Club mentor.
Roach said he believes that making good grades is the reason why he received this honor.
“I don’t do much. I only have four classes,” he said. Roach is in the Aquatics Management Systems and Environmental Technology (AMSET) program here at Lakewood. Roach also is a part of JJ Aquatics, a business that he and friends started to create ecosystems in fish tanks.
Senior Courtney Malcom
“I’m honored, very honored that someone actually sees the work I put in,” Malcom said. Malcom is in the running for 2016 valedictorian. She is always helping other students, and she is very involved in AMSET, AVID and her church.
Senior Amber Seay
“Getting honored for this award was like a pat on the back,” Seay said. Seay is active and always helping wherever people need help. She is in CJAM and PMAC and is also a Varsity Club mentor and SGA vice president.
Senior Tasha Taylor
“Being honored … made me feel good about myself, because that’s another reminder why I need to be on top of my stuff. And it makes me feel proud, it makes me feel like I’m being noticed,” Taylor said. Taylor is the advertising editor for CJAM, an AVID student and is on the honor roll almost every grading period.
Senior Mara Brody
“Being honored with this award made me feel good because it’s a lot of other kids at this school that could’ve been honored as well,” Brody said. Brody is in the CAT program. She is also in Girl Scouts and Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) Exquisite Gems, and she mentors at Melrose Elementary School.
