The Revenant, directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, is a gritty survival story of the famous American frontiersman, fur trapper and trader, hunter and explorer Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio) as he fights for life in the American West. Amid betrayal and grief Glass must survive a vicious winter in the wilderness. Throughout the film there is little talking as it is substituted for action to create a unique feel. The survival of Glass in the wilderness is not assured, and he will stop at nothing to make it back home.
Glass’ survival story begins when he is in the woods with his hunting team on an expedition. In the middle of the expedition, Glass is attacked and maimed by a bear. Thinking he is dead, members of the hunting party John Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy), Captain Andrew Henry (Domhnall Gleeson) and Bridger (Will Poulter) bury him and leave him for dead in the wilderness (Fittingly, “revenant” means a person who has returned, supposedly from the dead). This sets up his relentless fight for survival and redemption.
The Revenant is a unique tale that engages the audience in the film. It will stir up emotions in many watching as many will get invested in the riveting main character Hugh Glass. While the film is mostly targeted toward adults, the film could also be enjoyed by teens. The Revenant has received multiple awards and nominations. The film won three Golden Globes for Best Motion Picture (Drama), Best Director and Best Actor (Drama). The Revenant received 12 Academy Award nominations - the most of any film at the ceremony - including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor for DiCaprio and Hardy. I would recommend this movie to anyone who loves tales of survival and nature.
