DHMS Re-Opening Plans


Principal's Update August 4th, 2020:

DHMS is a Title I school this year for the first time in nearly a decade!  This means we are receiving additional federal funds that support programs for all of our students.  Title I status is determined by the number of Free and Reduced Lunch students we have each year.  We highly encourage our families to apply for Free and Reduced Lunch status each year so we can maintain our Title I programs.  Even though all students will receive free breakfast and lunch this school year, we need our families to continue to demonstrate the need so we can continue to receive funding. On Thursday, July 30, a transportation survey was sent directly to families who have selected the traditional learning option AND who receive transportation to/from school to gauge whether students will be utilizing this service during the first quarter of school. Your responses will support route planning and allocation. If you did not receive the link, you can access it here: Transportation 2020-21 Survey .  The survey closes August 5th at 11:59pm.

Backpacks are highly recommended this year for all students. See these opportunities from the City of Dunedin & Clearwater:

Dunedin Parks & Recreation is proud to offer a back to school backpack and school supply giveaway for the families in our community.  The giveaway will be held at the Martin Luther King Jr, Recreation Center, beginning on Monday, August 10th and run through Thursday, August 13th. A ticket/reservation is required for each school-age child and space is limited.

Reservations: An online ticket/reservation must be made for each school-age child through Eventbrite and we ask that families limit themselves to three ticket/reservations per household.

Available Reservation Dates:

  • Monday, August 10th,  5:15-6:15 pm
  • Tuesday, August 11th,  5:15-6:15 pm
  • Wednesday, August 12th,  5:15-6:15 pm
  • Thursday, August 13th,  5:15-6:15 pm

Clearwater Public Library Offering Free Backpacks; While Supplies Last

The Clearwater Public Library System will offer free backpacks, books and school supplies for students in grades kindergarten through 12. Stop by any of the library’s five locations Aug. 3 through Aug. 9 during open hours. Limited to one backpack per child if the child is present. If the child(ren) is not present, limited to two backpacks per family. With generous support from the Clearwater Library Foundation.

Principal's Update July 30th, 2020:

The Pinellas County School Board voted to push back our start date for the first day of school.  The first day of school is now Monday, August 24th.

I want to thank our families for responding the PCS Fall Learning Options selection process.  We still have a number of students who have not made a selection.  We want all of our families to make a selection so we can accurately schedule our students and teachers for August 24th.  If you were unable to make a selection please call us or email us to let us know your child’s learning choice.

Next week we will be open Monday through Friday 8:30-3:30pm.  Due to the PCS COVID-19 protocols, we are unable to receive walk-in visitors.  Most of our processes for registration and information gathering can be handled via phone, email, or through instructions on our website.  If you need to visit the school, please contact Mrs. Fox, the school secretary at 469-4112 ext. 2005 if you need to make an appointment.

We know parents would like to start back to school shopping, so we have published an updated school supply list to reflect our new procedures during the COVID-19 Pandemic. If you chose Traditional instruction for your student school supplies will be essential as students will not be able to share materials or borrow pens and pencils.  Some teachers will have additional requirements that you will receive in the course syllabus on the first day of school.  Students will not have lockers, so they will need a backpack this year, preferably with a compartment for a laptop.  We also highly recommend students have their own masks, personal hand sanitizer and sanitizing wipes, and a water bottle, as water fountains will be turned off in the building.  You can view the entire school supply list on our website.

We are excited to let all of our families know that all of our students will receive a brand new Dell laptop shortly after the start of the school year.  For now students enrolled in the Traditional and MyPCSOnline option should keep their laptops that they checked out in the Spring.  We will swap them out for the new laptops when they arrive.  Students who chose the Pinellas Virtual School option need to return their laptops to DHMS, as Pinellas Virtual School will be working with its new families regarding devices.

At DHMS we follow the Pinellas County Dress Code.  You can see the PCSB Dress Code on our website at: https://www.pcsb.org/Page/8990 .  You will also see a weekly “Dress for Success” flyer, however those dress up days are completely optional.

6th grade families should mark their calendars for August 19th, as we plan to hold a virtual 6th grade open house.  More details will follow.
