NCOD (National Coming Out Day) was founded by Robert Eichberg, an openly gay political leader from Los Angeles and now the head of the National Gay Rights Advocates. The day was founded in 1988, and on October 11. The day was chosen because of the 1987 National march on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights.
National Coming out day is a day to raise awareness for the LGBT community. It also raises awareness for the civil rights movement. Today is a big day for hundreds to millions of people, for gay and lesbians, and for family and friends of gay and lesbians.
In the United States the Human Rights Campaign offers resources to LGBT individuals, couples, parents and children, as well as straight friends and relatives.
So on October 11 raise your rainbow flag.
