Kindergarten 100 Book Challenge

  • Who doesn’t love sharing a good book?  We know through the largest-ever international study of reading that the single most important predictor of academic success is the amount of time children spend reading books. (Atwell, 2007).  We also know that the most successful students in KG are those that enter school having a rich and robust experience of being read to during their developmental years.

At Lakewood, we want to ensure that every Pre-K to Kindergarten student is given read aloud exposure to at least 100 books during the school year.  To accomplish this goal we need our community to come together and volunteer a few minutes of time to support this initiative and make it a success. This year, due to the pandemic we decided to be creative and create a virtual reading experience that our teachers and students can access to share in the joy of listening to a story read aloud.

What do you need to do:

    1. Choose your favorite story book.

    2. Make a recording of you reading the book. (the recording can be a voice over with just a video showing the turning of each page or an interactive video of you reading aloud)

      1. Include a short introduction of who you are, why you enjoy reading and the reason you chose your book.

    3. Email the recording to Ashley Richardson at richardsonas@pcsb.org by January 4th so that our media specialist can add it to our digital collection.

    4. Sit back, relax, and know that you made a difference!
