September 10, 2023 Callout

Good evening Jaguar Families, 

This past week was amazing!  We began testing for the FAST PM1 Assessment in ELA and the students did an outstanding job.  These tests are 90 minutes in length and the students showcased their ROAR Guidelines for Success by being Responsible and Organized.  All testing sessions ran very smoothly and we can’t wait for student PM1 Assessments results to arrive so we can start planning for next steps in their individual learning plans.

Back to School Night, or Open House, will be on Thursday, September 14th at from 5:30 – 7:30.  National Junior Honors Society will hold another informational meeting on Friday, September 15th at 9:00 in room 4-215.  Student Picture Day is scheduled for Monday, September 18th and we are looking for parent volunteers to help coordinate.  If you wish to volunteer, please contact Mrs. Jen Herrick, PTSA Board Member, at  Finally, we will be continuing FAST PM1 Assessments this week as we complete the final classes for ELA and then begin the Math Assessments on Tuesday.  All students have been notified of dates and times of their assessments and a calendar has been sent via email for your review.

September 11th is a B Day – Periods 5-8


9/14 – Back to School Night 5:30 – 7:30 – PTA/SAC Combination Meeting plus “Meet the Teacher” Rotations

Please one parent for student or family to attend.  Back to School Night will begin with a general PTA and SAC meeting in the Café.  We will then have a schedule to rotate to all of your students’ classes and meet the teacher to discuss class culture, academic rigor, and ways that students find success.


9/15 - Nation Junior Honor Society – Informational Meeting for Students at 9:00am in Room 4-215 (This is a second meeting opportunity due to potential absences on 9/1)

The National Junior Honor Society is an international student organization that consists of chapters in middle schools. The NJHS was founded by the National Association of Secondary School Principals, and today has chapters in the United States, other U.S. territories, and around the world. Joining NJHS in middle school will strengthen your scholar's opportunities through continuing with NHS in high school. 

If your scholar is interested in learning more about the requirements and expectations of joining the NJHS chapter at TMFMS this school year, please have them attend the information meeting on Friday September 1, 2023, at 9:00 in 4-215 with Ms. McClain. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Ms. McClain directly via email. 9/18 - Student Picture Day – Monday, September 18th – WE NEED VOLUNTEERS

Thurgood Staff is in need of parent volunteers for this event.  We will need 6 volunteers from 9:30am until 1:00pm and then 6 more volunteers from 1:00pm until 4:00pm.

9/11 – 9/19 - PM1 Testing for ELA and Math

All students, grades 6 through 8, will be participating the PM1 FAST Assessment for both Reading and Math.  These tests are adaptive so students will see a range of question types and they may become more difficult as the test progresses.  This first assessment will be used to help track individual student progress, determine remediation and intervention plans, and help the teachers and students set goals prior to the PM2 test which will be administered in December and January. A letter outlining these assessments was sent home on Friday 8/25.

Testing for 6th, 7th, and 8th Grade Reading started Last week and will be completed on Monday.  Math assessments for PM1 will begin on Tuesday, 9/12 and will continue through next Tuesday.  The schedule is below:

TMFMS – Meeting Calendar of Events

Please review the attached document that includes the current list of scheduled events for the year.  Use this calendar to guide yourself in deciding which meetings to attend for your meeting credit options.  Remember, you will need to attend 6 meetings this year to be in compliance the Fundamental schools parent agreement.  As of right now, we have 24 events scheduled that can earn your credits.  There are also options for volunteer work, chaperones, booster groups and committees that allow for you to earn credits as pertaining to the parent agreement and Fundamental policy.

R'ClubIf you are interested in enrolling your child/ren at R'Club where we focus on teaching Respect, Resourcefulness, Responsibility and Responsiveness then this is the program for you for before and aftercare! Cell Phone Policy – Phones are to remain away all day. 

Phones that are out in any school setting can be confiscated and provided to the front office where a parent will have to pick up.  Phones that are confiscated will not be handed back to students at the end of the day.  Students may use phones in the morning as they wait to enter the building, but once they enter for breakfast, the phones are put away.  Students are also permitted to use phones after school ends as they wait for buses and parent pick up.


Dress Code 

  • Please use the link below to access the Thurgood Marshall Dress Code for the 2023-2024 School year.  
  • Main changes/clarifications include: 
  • Shorts are permitted as long as they are the “Uniform Shorts.”  Items that are not permitted include cargo style shorts, athletic shorts, basketball shorts, or any shorts not fitting the Fundamental Guidelines. Length requirements are on the link above. 
  • Pants must be acceptable for the school setting.  They must be free of holes, rips, and tears.  Pajama style pants are not acceptable. 
  • Shoes must have a permanent backing – Crocs or sandals where the back can be altered, adjusted, or switched are not permitted. 
  • Hoodies are not permitted on campus.  Students are only permitted to wear jackets, sweatshirts, or long sleaved items as long as they do not have an attached hood.  All items must adhere to the Fundamental Policies, be school appropriate, and meet the guidelines set forth in the PCS Student Code of Conduct. 


School Lunch - Free to All Students (students will use their Lunch PIN to log they have received a lunch.  This PIN will also be used for our Tardy tracking system which will begin next week)


School Hours – Student hours are from 9:40 – 4:10 Monday through Friday. 

  • Students can be dropped off by parents in the car circle located behind the school off of 19th Ave South.   
  • Students should not arrive to campus before 9:10 each day. 
  • Students will be permitted to enter campus at 9:10 each morning where they will report to the cafeteria for breakfast. 
  • Students must be picked up by 4:40 each afternoon. 
  • If students are participating in any ELP, Tutoring, Enrichment, or club opportunities, they must be picked up by 5:15pm.
