    Fall Festival

    Red Ribbon Week-Monday, October 23-Friday, October 27th

    RED RIBBON WEEK!!

Red Ribbons symbolizes the promise for a healthy, drug-free lifestyle and making good choices.  Many schools participate in Red Ribbon Week across the United States to show the importance being drug free.  As educators and parents, we are some of the most important role models in the lives of children.  To get in the spirit of saying “NO TO DRUGS,” students and staff at Ozona Elementary will be dressing up each day.  Below are the plans for Monday through Friday.  Please encourage your child(ren) to participate all week and make healthy choices for life!

Monday, Oct. 23rd-“Cuddle up to a drug-free life” (Gr. PreK-K will receive a bear sticker) “We stay in the game drug free” (Gr. 1-3 will receive a sports sticker) “#IM DRUG FREE” (Gr. 4-5 will receive an arm band).

Tuesday, Oct. 24th-“Lei” off drugs! (wear Hawaiian)

Wednesday, Oct. 25th-I’m “red-y” to live a drug free life! (wear red)

Thursday, Oct. 26th- From "head to toe" I'm drug free! (wear silly hair and/or socks)

Friday, Oct. 27th-Say “boo” to drugs! (partnering with APDs-wear a school appropriate costume-no weapons, face painting or masks).

Also, our students will be participating in Red Ribbon Week by talking about this event in their classrooms, listening to morning announcements including a daily trivia question, grades 3-5 may participate in an optional mini poster contest, and there will be over 20 different posters around school promoting saying “No to Drugs. ”

Together we can make a positive difference in the choices and decisions children make about their health and lifestyle.  Here are a few ideas on how parents can help:

-Build your child’s self-esteem:  help your child find something they are good at, give them encouragement and praise, and let them know you love them and you are proud of them.

-Teach your child to say no:  it can be difficult to say no, so help your child think of things to say and do that will help get them out of a sticky situation.

-Be a good role model:  let your child see you following healthy habits.

-Connect with your child’s friends:  pay attention to who your child is hanging out with, who’s coming to your house and do your best to get to know them.

-Promote healthy activities:  encourage your child to become involved in school and community activities such as music, sports, and arts.

-Establish clear family rules:  set specific, clear rules so your child knows your expectations and also the consequences for breaking the rules.

-Be media-savvy:  read, watch TV and movies with your child, and compare media images to reality.

-Be a good listener:  make sure your child feels comfortable bringing problems or questions to you and that they realize they can rely on you for accurate information.

Please help support this very important program.  Thank you for your help.

    Sincerely, Nicola Repetosky    School Counselor
