    Athletic Requirements

Being a student-athlete comes with many responsibilities. Demonstrating a strong athletic ability in your chosen sport is obviously important, but there is much more to it than that. Student-athletes at Mangrove Bay Middle School are expected to put the student component above all else, including maintaining good conduct, attendance, and grades. Please read the athletic requirements below thoroughly.

    Try-Outs

In order to try out for any sport at Mangrove Bay Middle School, students must*:

Note: Physical exams are only valid for one year. If the physical exam expires during the season in which the athlete is trying out, they must receive another physical exam.

    • Have a GPA of 2.0 or higher (current grades or previously posted report card)
    • Have no more than one behavior referral in the current semester
    • Have good attendance

*No exceptions will be made without a parent conference with the athletic director and coach(es). Parent is responsible for scheduling this conference.

    Student-Athlete Requirements

Student-athletes are expected to be role models for our school. They are held to a higher standard and must maintain that standard the duration of their participation on a sports team.

    All student-athletes must:

    • Maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA with no D’s or F’s at any time on the gradebook
    • Have no more than 1 behavior referral during the sports’ season
    • Have no more than two tardies to a class other than 1st period
    • Have no more than two unexcused absences

    Practice

All student-athletes are expected to adhere to the practice schedule set forth by their coach(es). If a student-athlete can not attend a practice for any reason, they must let their coach know as soon as possible.

If a student-athlete misses two or more practices, they will be put on probation.

Bring athletic wear (t-shirt, shorts, athletic pants) in order to fully participate in each practice. You can wear your gym clothes. Be sure to always wear appropriate footwear to keep your feet and ankles safe from injury. Crocs are NEVER allowed during practice or games.

    Transportation

There will be several games and sometimes practices on other campuses around the county. Parents/guardians must transport students to and from all games.

If an away game takes place at a school more than 5 miles away, parents should pick up students early. The time will be dependent on the away school and the start time of the game. More details will be provided for each sport, including an early release permission slip.

    Probation

Probation means a student-athlete is not fulfilling their academic or behavioral expectations to the school. Probation will be conducted as follows:

    • A student will be placed on probation for 1 week if they break any of the criteria outlined in the student-athlete requirements.
    • During probation, a 1-week period, students will not be allowed to participate in games/matches. They will not be allowed to wear their jersey during the school day on game days. They will be allowed to participate in practices. They will not be allowed to participate in any extra-curricular activities sponsored by their team for the duration of probation.
    • After 1 week, if a student continues to have low grades, behavior referrals, or attendance issues, they will be removed from the team. If a student improves their grades, receives no behavior referrals, and has no attendance issues, they will be allowed to remain on the team and removed from probation.
    • If a student-athlete must be put on probation for a second time during the sports’ season, they will be dismissed from the team.

    Jerseys

All student-athletes assigned to the team will receive a jersey. Student-athletes should leave the jersey with their coach to be washed for the next game. Student-athletes must return their jersey to their coach at the end of the season. Jerseys that are not returned will incur a $30 fee.
