Locker Policies and Rules:
Florida State Statute 1006.09(9) states, "A school principal or a school employee designated by the principal, if she or he has reasonable suspicion that a prohibited or illegally possessed substance or object is contained within a student’s locker or other storage area, may search the locker or storage area. [...] This subsection does not prohibit the use of metal detectors or specially trained animals in the course of a search for illegally possessed substances or objects."
In addition, the PCSB Code of Conduct, on p. 49, states, "A student’s locker, vehicle, purse, backpack, and other personal possessions can be searched if there is a reasonable suspicion that any of them contain drugs, weapons, contraband or other items not permitted on campus. Trained sniff-screening dogs are allowed in the schools to prevent drugs and weapons at school. The routine checks by the dogs are not considered a search by law. They are safety preventions to give students a safe and healthy school in which to learn."
.) Lockers are first come, first serve. When there are no more available lockers, no more will be assigned.
.) A locker is ONLY for use by the student to whom it has been assigned. Any object in the locker is the responsibility of the student to whom it has been assigned.
.) Locker combinations are to be kept private by the assigned student. Combinations won't and can't be changed if a student chooses to give out their combination.
.) A student's locker number and combination are their responsibility. Students should write them down and keep them in a safe place. We suggest taking a photo of it to save on their phone. If students forget or misplace their locker number or combination, students should seek out their parent/guardian for support. Parents/guardians have been emailed receipt of the locker number and combination.
.) Locker assignments take in many considerations, including grade level, class locations, and DAP enrollment. Locker assignments will not be changed to accommodate personal preference.
.) A student should practice their locker combination in order to be able to use it with ease and efficiency. Students who are tardy to class because of a locker issue will be subject to the standard MFMS tardy procedures and will not be excused.
.) Lockers may be used before school (9:35-9:40) and after school (4:10-4:15). Lockers may not be used any other time of the day.
.) Locker rental is $10 a school year, non-refundable. Proceeds from locker rentals fund the MFMS PBIS programming.
.) Students are prohibited from storing opened food or drink items overnight and over school breaks in their lockers. This is to prevent pest infestation. In addition, students should be reminded that they are prohibited from storing anything in their locker that is also prohibited by the PCSB Code of Conduct.
.) Refusal to comply with the MFMS Locker Policies will subject a student to the standard disciplinary procedures in the PCSB Code of Conduct. Consequences may include rescinding or restricting a student's locker privileges for the remainder of the year.11.) If a student loses their locker combination, they should reach out to the clerk in their grade level office to get that combination. Parents may also reach out to the grade level clerk via email for that information.
.) Students are PROHIBITED from sharing their locker combination with anyone else. Lockers are not to be shared.
.) No instruction is provided on opening lockers. If students need a tutorial, they should use this video, which is a short tutorial on opening a school locker: youtube.com/watch?v=WMunxok-89c
