Weekend Update 10-23-22

Hello, Carwise Middle School families.  This is Mr. Eiben, your principal, reaching out with your weekend update.  I hope everyone is enjoying the weekend!

First, I want to thank all of the parents who helped chaperone the SPIFFS field trip!  We appreciate your help.  Additionally, thank you to the parents who took part in the District Middle School Focus Group at Carwise.  Your participation is greatly appreciated.  Thank you all!

For this coming week, due to continued late busses we will begin to rotate each week starting the day in 1st and 3rd period.  This is the same process we used last school year.  This coming week we will start the day in 3rd period.  The period schedule progression for this coming week will be:  3, 2, 1, 4, 5, 6, 7.  The following week we will start in 1st period (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7).  We will continue this rotation each week until bus arrival times improve.  I apologize for any inconvenience; however, this rotation will ensure that students are not missing the same 1st period class every day.  Thank you for your understanding.

Monday we will have our first National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) meeting for 8th grade students that received acceptance letters at 8:50AM in the cafeteria.  Also, Monday we will have after school ELP/tutoring in the media center from 4:20 until 5:20PM.  Please be sure to pick-up your child in the car circle behind the school.

Tuesday is our re-scheduled FBLA Fall Rally field trip to Innisboork.  Also, Tuesday we will again have after school ELP/tutoring in the media center from 4:20 until 5:20PM.

Wednesday we will have before school ELP/tutoring in the media center from 8:20 until 9:20AM.  Please drop off your child in front of the school at the main office.

Friday is college day!  Wear your favorite college gear!

Attention parents and students, we are launching a new reading incentive program called:  Carwise Cover to Cover.  We are starting this program to help promote the importance of reading (which was lost during the pandemic).  Research shows that students who read independently have greater reading comprehension, verbal fluency, and general knowledge than those who do not.  Additionally reading improves brain function, reduces stress, and improves your state of mind.  Thus, we are starting Carwise Cover to Cover!  Students who read and document 1,000 pages of independent reading over the next 10-weeks will be rewarded with a celebration that will include prizes, pizza, and surprises!  Students will need signatures from a parent and their Language Arts teacher as part of the process.  Check out the attached flyer below.  The deadline for the reading log is December 22nd.  Parents, please help us get our students reading again!  Thank you!

Last, parents we need your help with monitoring and reinforcing appropriate behavior.  At school, we conduct weekly lessons regarding appropriate student behavior, including how to handle and prevent bullying.  However, we need your help to reinforce what appropriate behavior is.  Please help by talking to your child about being respectful, kind, and accepting.  Also, please help by monitoring what your child does on social media.  Unfortunately, social media is often a major contributor to social issues.  It takes a village, and we appreciate your help.

Thank you, Carwise families, for your continued support of Carwise Middle where we are Committed to Excellence in Education.  Take care and enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Last week, students who ordered school pictures received them on Friday.  Additionally, picture re-takes will occur on October 5th.  So, if your child missed picture day or does not like their picture, re-takes will be October 5th.  If you are opting for re-takes, please return your first set of pictures on picture re-take day.  Also, last week on Friday student who met GPA and behavior requirements for the National Junior Society received invitation letters to attend a student informational meeting on October 3rd at 8:50AM.  The application process and chapter expectations will be explained to prospective members at the meeting.  Students or parents that have any questions should contact Ms. Himmel at himmelp@pcsb.org

If schools are open this coming week, our week will consist of the following:

Monday we will have after school ELP/tutoring in the media center from 4:20 until 5:20PM.  Please be sure to pick-up your child in the car circle behind the school.  Also, after school we will have a home volleyball game vs Dunedin Middle.  Please remember that tickets to the game are $2.  Best of luck to our athletes!

Tuesday (through Thursday) our students will being the process of taking the Write Score assessment during their Language Arts classes.  This assessment will help us gage our students’ writing abilities so we can provide supports where needed.  Also, Tuesday we will again have after school ELP/tutoring in the media center from 4:20 until 5:20PM.

For those 8th grade families that are interested in the Countryside High School I-Stem program, please review the attached flyer for information about their Discovery Night and student shadowing days.

Last, just a reminder that September is School Attendance Awareness month.  Sporadic absences, not just those on consecutive days of school, matter.  Before you know it, just one or two days a month can add up to nearly 10% of the school year.  This puts students at risk of negatively impacting their education.  Help us set an example that attendance matters.  Thank you!

Thank you, Carwise families, for your continued support of Carwise Middle where we are Committed to Excellence in Education.  Please stay tuned for more information regarding any potential school closings due to the tropical weather.  Thank you and take care!

Mid-Week Update 09/08/22

Hello, Carwise Middle School families.  This is Mr. Eiben, your principal, reaching out with some mid-week updates.

First, thank you staff and families for your flexibility when the power went out today.  Parents, please talk with your child about appropriate behavior during emergency situations.  Thank you too all the students who quietly waited for instructions from staff the staff at Carwise.

Once again, our 7th & 8th Grade Open House will be canceled for this evening due to the power outage.  The power has come back on, but the buildings are getting warm, and we are not sure if the A/C is working correctly.  Thus, we will be rescheduling our 7th & 8th Grade Open House for Thursday, September 22nd.  Thank you for your understanding.

Next week, our PTSA will be hosting our first meeting of the school year on Tuesday, September 13th at 6:30PM in the Media Center.  At this meeting, the PTSA will be presenting their budget for approval.  Also, we will have a special presentation from the Pinellas County School Prevention Office regarding suicide prevention awareness.  In this session, facilitators will discuss signs to watch for, available resources, and what to do when your student needs help.  With September being Suicide Prevention Awareness Month and September 10th being World Suicide Prevention Day we knew this would be a very fitting and important presentation.  Please see the attached flyer for more information.  Don’t miss out.

In recognition of World Suicide Prevention Day, we are asking students and staff to wear Teal and Black to school tomorrow (Friday, September 9th).

Additionally, PCS is teaming up with NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness).  NAMI is offering a new teen program called EVOLVE.  This is a free 6-week mental health education program for youth under 18.  Topics will include stigma, finding help, and self-care.  This program will take place virtually on Saturday mornings starting September 24th.  Please see the attached flyer for more information and the link to register.

Last, September is also Attendance Awareness Month.  Research shows that nearly 9 out of 10 students who missed more than four days of school in September were chronically absent that school year.  Chronic absences, or missing two or more days of school a month, whether excused or unexcused, is associated with poor READING skills.  Help us help your child be successful in school.  Have them at school daily and on time.  Thank you!

Thank you again, families, for your continued support of Carwise Middle where we are Committed to Excellence in Education.  Take care!

Weekend Update 08-28-22

Hello, Carwise Middle School families.  This is Mr. Eiben, your principal, reaching out with your weekend update.  I hope everyone is enjoying the weekend!  Once again, we had another great week at Carwise!

This coming week we will include lots of events, so please pay close attention.  This Monday we will begin our class balancing process to ensure that no classes are overloaded.  We do this to guarantee that our school meets the state required class size amendment law.  However, this does mean that students may receive a schedule change.  We know that this is not ideal, and we work to avoid this when possible.  Nevertheless, please know that some students will inevitably receive changes to their schedule.  This Monday, all students will check the 1st period class rosters that will be posted before school, just like we did on the first day of school.  This will direct students to their first period class where new schedules will be passed out.

On Tuesday (and Thursday), our students will take part in the new Florida Assessment of Student Thinking (FAST) progress monitoring assessment.  These assessments will monitor progress in reading and math three times a year to track student’s progress in learning the required materials.  Please note that these are progress monitoring assessments.  The results of the first assessments will only be used to help teachers understand what areas to focus on with their students.  The questions on these assessments will get easier or more difficult depending on how the student responds, and each student will see different questions.  Tuesday’s test will focus on Reading.

Wednesday we will kick off our exciting school-wide fundraiser that will help fund our Shark Bite Reward Program as well as provide other student and staff rewards and incentives.  Additionally, this fundraiser will have awesome student prizes.  Please be on the lookout for more information and look for the “Golden Ticket” to come home with your child on Wednesday.

Thursday students will take the Math section of the FAST progress monitoring assessment.  Again, the results of the first assessments will only be used to help teachers understand what areas to focus on with their students.  Also, Thursday evening our Performing Arts Boosters will be hosting a Spirit Night at Vampire Penguin Shaved Snow & Desserts.  Please see the attached flyer and come out to support the Performing Arts!

Each Friday we will be promoting College and Careers.  To take part, student should wear their favorite college, university, or tech college gear!  Go Gators and Bulls!

Also, this coming week we will kick off ELP and clubs.  Please check out the attached document to learn about our Extended Learning Program (ELP) times/days as well as all of our amazing clubs.  Don’t miss out on these great opportunities.

Additionally, if you are interested in learning more about the upcoming FAST progress monitoring assessments this week, you can find more information about the test and see sample questions at flfast.org/families.  Once on the site, just select the grade band appropriate for your student(s).

More information about the BEST standards and the new state assessments can be found at https://www.fldoe.org/accountability/assessments/k-12-student-assessment/best/.

Parents, if your child rides a bike to school, please encourage them to place their bike in one of our two bike racks.  Additionally, bikes should be locked up each day.  We had numerous bikes this past week that were not locked up and were not in the bike rack.  Thank you for your help!

Last, please support the Carwise PTSA.  This group provides many resources and programs that support our students, staff, and families.  Click here to check out the new PTSA website and to register to be a member.

Thank you, families, for your continued support of Carwise Middle where we are Committed to Excellence in Education.  Take care!

August 23rd Update

Hello, Carwise Middle School families.  This is Mr. Eiben, your principal, with a mid-week update.

I am excited to announce that we have secured coaches for our boys and girls volleyball teams.  I know it will be a quick turnaround, but the season is starting soon.  So, we will have boys and girls tryouts this week on Thursday and Friday (August 25th and 26th) after school until 5:30PM each day.  Students must attend both days.  Also, we will need a participation form (attached), a copy of a physical within the last year, and a copy of school insurance (link).  Information packets can be picked up in the media center.  Paperwork can be turned in at the media center OR students can bring their paperwork to the gym during tryouts.  Best of luck to our athletes!

Additionally, we continue to have a few late busses each day.  Please know that a bus will always come for our students, even if it is running late.  Thus, students should remain at the bus stop in the morning until the bus arrives.  We are hopeful that these issues will be worked out soon.  If you have questions or concerns regarding busses, please reach out to the Transportation Department (727-587-2020).  Also, if you are not yet signed up to receive notifications about late busses and bus changes, I highly recommend you sign up for Bus Bulletin.  Click here for more information about the Bus Bulletin notification system.

Last, I sent an email out earlier today regarding an upcoming fundraiser for our school.  This fundraiser will help fund our Shark Bites Reward Program as well as provide other student and staff rewards and incentives.  Additionally, this fundraiser will have awesome student prizes.  If you did not get the email, please reach out to the school to ensure your email address is correct in Focus.  Thank you!

Thank you, again families, for your continued support of Carwise Middle where we are Committed to Excellence in Education.  Take care!

Last, parents please know that good student attendance at school helps children do well at school and eventually in the workplace.  Good attendance matters for school success.  By middle and high school, poor attendance is the leading indicator of dropping out of school.  Developing the habit of good attendance prepares students for success in school, the workplace, and in life.  Please help and support good attendance.  Thank you!

Carwise Middle Upcoming School Events

Hello, Carwise Middle School families.  My name is Mr. Eiben and I am the proud principal at Carwise Middle School.  I am reaching out to inform our families of some upcoming school events.  We are looking forward to a fun-filled school year.

First, for our incoming 6th graders we have Shark Camp this Wednesday, July 27th.  This camp will help familiarize our incoming 6th graders with the school campus, processes and procedures as well as allow them to meet other 6th graders and teachers too.  I highly encourage any 6th grader that is nervous about starting middle school to attend this camp.  We will offer two time slots on this day.  The first is 9AM until 11:15 for last names staring with letters A through L.  The second time slot is 12:30PM until 2:45 for last names starting with letters M through Z.  No RSVP or reservation necessary.  Also, parents are encouraged to stay the first 15 minutes of each session.

Additionally, we will have our 6th Grade Open House on Monday, August 8th.  Doors will open at 5:30PM and the program will begin at 6PM.  Starting at 5:30PM, families can sign up for the PTSA, purchase spirit wear, put money on lunch accounts, pick up information regarding sports, and register to be a volunteer and/or mentor.  Once on campus we will have 1st period classes posted alphabetically for each student in the cafeteria.  At 6PM, students will report to their 1st period class and pick up their schedule.  During open house you will stay in each class for a short period of time to find out about each class and teacher.  This is a great event that allows students to meet their teachers and walk the school to see where their classes are located before the first day of school.

Our 7th and 8th Grade Open House will be held later in the school year on Thursday, September 8th.  More information will come as the date gets closer.

Attention parents of 7th graders, please remember that we need your child’s updated shot records.  Seventh grade students are required to have their Tdap vaccine prior to the start of school or a valid documented exemption.  Otherwise, students will be excluded from classes as per Florida Statue.  If you have not done so, please drop off your shot records to the front office.  Thank you!

Attached to the accompanying email is a general school supply list.  This is not an all-inclusive list as some teachers have specific items that they may require for their class.  However, this list will include most items that will be needed for school.  Please reach out to the school if you need assistance with school supplies.

Parents please know that student schedules are still being completed by our school staff.  Schedules are not finalized at this point and are still subject to change up until the first day of school.  Additionally, class sizes will be balanced after the first 10 days of school, so additional schedule changes may occur.  Please know that any changes are done so to ensure students are placed in the appropriate classes in order to promote student success.

We are looking forward to a fantastic school year at Carwise Middle.  School starts for students on Wednesday, August 10th.  Please reach out if you have any questions.  Enjoy the rest of your summer and take care.
