  • All classes this year will be utilizing a social skills curriculum.  Guidance lessons to support our Commitment To Character program will also be delivered once a month by our school Guidance Counselor, Kim Dumaine.  This curriculum, SMART KIDS, will be shared during the morning meeting and will help to support the following Florida Standards:

     

    Kindergarten

    SL.K.1.a

    Follow agreed-upon rules for discussions (e.g., listening to others and taking turns speaking about the topics and texts under discussion).

    SL.K.6

    Speak audibly and express thoughts, feelings, and ideas clearly.

    W.K.8

    With guidance and support from adults, recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question.

    Grade 1

    SL.1.1.a

    Follow agreed-upon rules for discussions (e.g., listening to others with care, speaking one at a time about the topics and texts under discussion).

    SL.1.1.b

    Build on others’ talk in conversations by responding to the comments of others through multiple exchanges.

    SL.1.6

    Produce complete sentences when appropriate to task and situation.

    W.1.8

    With guidance and support from adults, recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question.

    Grade 2

    SL.2.1.a

    Follow agreed-upon rules for discussions (e.g., gaining the floor in respectful ways, listening to others with care, speaking one at a time about the topics and texts under discussion).

    SL.2.1.b

    Build on others’ talk in conversations by linking their comments to the remarks of others.

    SL.2.6

    Produce complete sentences when appropriate to task and situation in order to provide requested detail or clarification.

    W.2.8

    With guidance and support from adults, recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question.

     

    Students in grades 3-5 wlll be using the TOUGH KIDS curriculum.  This program is designed to

    • Sets a positive tone
    • Provides a sense of recognition and belonging
    • Helps children learn names
    • Gives practice in offering hospitability
    • Helps develop the skills of caring communication and involvement with one another
    • Extends the knowing and being known that is essential for the development of community and for individuals’ sense of significance
    • Encourages habits of inquiry and thought important for cognitive growth
    • Provides practice in speaking to a group in a strong and individual voice
    • Strengthens vocabulary development and reading success
    • Contributes to the sense of community culture by building a class repertoire of common material
    • Fosters active and engaged participation
    • Heightens the class’s sense of group identity
    • Encourages cooperation and inclusion

    This program will support the following grade level standards:

    Grade 3

    SL.3.1.b

    Explain their own ideas and understanding in light of the discussion

    Speak in complete sentences when appropriate to task and situation in order to provide requested detail or clarification.

    Grade 4

    SL.4.1.b

    Follow agreed-upon rules for discussions and carry out assigned roles.

    SL.4.1d

    Review the keys ideas expressed and explain their own ideas and understanding in light of the discussion.

    SL.4.6

    Differentiate between context that call for formal English and situations where informal discourse is appropriate; use formal English when appropriate to task and situation.

    Grade 5

    SL.5.1.b

    Follow agreed-upon rules for discussions and carry out assigned roles.

    SL.5.1.d

    Review the key ideas expressed and draw conclusions in light of information and knowledge gained from the discussions.

    SL.5.6

    Adapt speech to a variety of contexts and tasks, using formal English when appropriate to task and situation.

  • At Ponce de Leon we work hard to ensure each and every student knows what it takes to be a successful Ponce Explorer.

    You will find all staff members working with children to demonstrate, teach, and model our basic tenets for appropriate and expected behaviors throughout the school. We call these our, Guidelines for Success.
