K-KidsK- Kids (also known as Kiwanis Kids) is an international organization at the elementary level sponsored by a local Kiwanis club. At Safety Harbor Elementary that would be the Kiwanis Club of Safety Harbor. The goal of K-Kids is to teach the children responsibility, leadership and service to others. We have been active at SHES for five years and have planted three gardens, provided teacher appreciation gifts and cards, visited nursing homes to give out handmade flowers and place mats for the residents. We have also held other events which support our school and community. Last year we gave over $500 to the Pinellas County Healthy Start Program to provide cloth diapers for new babies. Another year we gave $500 to the Mattie Williams Neighborhood Center to provide food for the children who attend that facility for their summer program. Additionally we raised a large amount of money last year to help ensure that every child at Safety Harbor Elementary was able to purchase books at the book fairs. Two years ago we collected money at the December Kiwanis Arts and Craft Show to provide immunizations against tetanus for babies and mothers in under-developed countries. This was done in conjunction with the Kiwanis International project entitled Eliminate and UNICEF. At the holiday season, we sponsor a party for residents of the Haven House and Grace House which help families in difficult situations.
For those of you who are not familiar with K Kids, it is the elementary level part of the Kiwanis family. You may be familiar with Key Club which is the high school counterpart. There is also a club for middle school (Builder’s Club) and college (CKI). Anyone can be a part of the Kiwanis Family.
We are very grateful this year to have two faculty advisors, Joleen Ross and Betty Eason, a parent advisor, Rebecca Jones and two Kiwanis advisors, Lynne Burghardt and Claire Cousins.
The K Kids club meets on Friday mornings at 7:30 a.m. in the art room. All students in grades K through 5 are welcome to participate. There are no membership dues and no cost to the children or parents. The only requirement is that the parent sign permission form and make sure the child attends meetings. Income from the school store along with a line-item amount in the Kiwanis of Safety Harbor budget provides the funds needed for our activities.
