The Beach Theater: A Historic Treasure Making a Comeback

Originally opened on January 15, 1940, The Beach Theater made history as Pinellas County’s first theater built specifically for sound. It was also one of the first in the area to offer air conditioning, a welcome luxury that made it a favorite spot for moviegoers of the time.

Sadly, the theater closed its doors in 2012 and remained vacant for over a decade. That all changed in 2024, when Hanna Hockman stepped in as the new owner and director with a bold vision to restore and reimagine the space.

Hanna plans to bring The Beach Theater back to life not just as a movie theater, but as a multifunctional community space hosting films, live plays, music, and social events for the entire St. Pete Beach area. Her mission is to create a place where history, entertainment, and community come together.

While the project faced a major challenge from Hurricanes Haleen and Milton, which hit the area in September 2024, Hanna and her team remained undeterred. They’re working hard toward a grand reopening in July 2025, and they’re determined to make a lasting impact on Corey Avenue and beyond.

Based in the heart of St. Petersburg and the Tampa Bay area, SunPub is a local hospitality group known for its five standout restaurants: MacDinton’s Irish Pub & Restaurant, Sculley’s, Grove Kitchen & Lounge, Mad Beach Cantina, and Caddy’s Waterfront Dining. These beloved spots are known not only for their great food and drinks, but for their commitment to serving the local community.

At the start of the school year, SunPub extended a generous hand to our school, pledging a significant monetary donation and treating our entire staff to monthly appreciation luncheons. Their thoughtful support has been deeply appreciated and has made a meaningful impact on our school family.

Sadly, just a month after their kind gesture, all Caddy’s Waterfront Dining locations were temporarily closed due to the severe damage caused by Hurricanes Helene and Milton in 2024. Despite the setbacks, SunPub’s other restaurants remain open, continuing to serve delicious meals and unforgettable experiences.
