The big difference from elementary school to middle school is the hours of the school days. In middle school, the doors open at 9:20am and the day ends at 4:10pm.
Students are automatically enrolled in the middle school for which they are zoned. To find your student’s zoned school, click on the school zone locator found on the PCSB website.
The majority of students at PCE are commonly zoned for Morgan Fitzgerald and Pinellas Park Middle. However, depending on where you live, your student may be zoned for Azalea, Meadowlawn, Oak Grove, Osceola, Seminole, or Tyrone.
Some schools have dress codes including uniform requirements. Look through the website of your student’s zoned school in order to determine what their school dress code is.
Parents also have the option to apply for a magnet or fundamental school or specialized middle school program for students who live anywhere in the county. For more information on the schools available and different program options, please visit the District Application Program website. There is a special application and application period for these schools.
Middle school students have a minimum of 7 periods (classes) a day. The 7 periods include the 4 required courses: Math, Language Arts, Science, Social Studies and 2-3 Electives which includes Physical Education (P.E.). Students typically must take P.E. at least one semester per school year. Students must pass all three years (6th grade, 7th grade, 8th grade) of the core curriculum courses or higher level courses in order to go on to high school. In addition to the core curriculum, students will have the opportunity to choose elective courses based on their interests. The number and topic of elective courses students can choose varies by school. Some of the common elective courses include:
AVID Basic Theater/Exploring Music
Visual Arts Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM)
Band/Orchestra Family & Consumer Science
Physical Education Gymnastics/Dance
Computers/Technology World Language (Spanish, French, ASL)
*Gifted programs are for those students who have passed the screening for gifted education.
As the school counselor, I work closely with 5th grade students in the spring on their elective options and selections and help families navigate the transition from elementary school to middle school.
