• Parents who would like to send snacks should call the school office or teacher to ensure the items are within the guidelines. School provided snacks must comply with the fat and sugar limits of the Pinellas County Schools Nutrition Standards and may not be Foods of Minimal Nutritional Value (soda water, water ices, chewing gum and certain candies) or consist of candy or dessert-type items (cookies, cakes, cupcakes, pudding, ice cream or frozen desserts, etc.).

    All food must be in the original, unopened store packaging. Homemade food items are not allowed. In accordance with 64E-11.002 Food Code, all snacks or food must originate from an establishment that is under the regulatory authority of a state or federal agency.

    With principal permission, students may be given low nutritional foods, candy items or other restricted foods during the school day for up to two different school-approved events each year. These food items may not be given while school meals are being served. 

    Examples of allowed snack items:

    • Pretzels
    • Crackers (such as goldfish, teddy grahams, animal, graham)
    • 100% juice boxes or unsweetened fruit juice
    • Low-fat cheese or cheese sticks
    • Muffins (without icing)
    • Fresh fruits (such as bananas, apples, pears, grapes)
    • Canned fruits (in natural or light juices)
    • Fresh vegetables (such as baby carrots, broccoli, celery sticks)
    • Dried fruit (such as raisins, craisins, banana chips)
    • Granola
    • Trail mix
    • Applesauce cups
    • Nuts or seeds (such as almonds, sunflower seeds, cashews)
    • Baked chips, baked veggie chips, or baked tortilla chips
    • Cereal bars, granola bars, or oatmeal bars
    • Mini-muffins, bagels or English muffins
    • Whole grain breads
    • Sugar-free gelatin cups
    • Individually wrapped rice krispie treats
